Question about Volkswagen Jetta

1 Answer

Hello..... I have a problem with my 2001 VW Jetta Wolfsburg edition. Last January Midas replaced all 4 brake pads, rotors, and abs sensor on left rear wheel. Recently my abs and traction control light started coming on again. It would go on and off. If I shut the car off, and turned it back on again often the lights would go out. Today I needed to travel about 60 miles and about 40 miles into the trip my brake light started flashing and beeping. I was near my destination and my car was turned off for about 2 hours. I checked my brake fluid and it was ok. It's the yellow cap behind the battery on the driver's side....I am sure that was right. When I returned to my car the brake light was not on, my abs and traction control light was on. About 20 miles on my way home, the brake light came on again. The other thing I had happen was my power steering fluid seems to be leaking and I had to add some today. This happened to me about a year ago and then it stopped. I never had to take it in to have anything fixed, I don't think the two problems are related. Can you give me some ideas about the brake light that I can look at? Could it be a fuse? I am a pretty handy gal and if you lead me in the right direction I am pretty good at fixing or identifying a problem Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks..........

Hello, I checked the diagnostic info for your Jetta. The #1 problem is the wheel position sensor circuit. Each wheel has a sensor and a sensor ring. The sensor will come out of alignment with the ring and no signal will be sent to the ABS computer which makes the lights come on. Brake light and / or ABS and TRAC light. I suggest you have a VW technician use the OBD2 ABS Scanner to get the codes from the computer before you spend money on it. Most places will scan the ABS computer for free.

ABS light is on and breaks seem to be locked

I just ran into a similar problem with my vehicle. ABS sensor wires commonly fall into places they should and get rubbed down or fall right off so that could be part of the problem and as far as brakes locking up, the brake caliper has 2 (I believe) pistons that if not lubed during last brake service COULD be causing your problem. I was estimated $1200 at my local Midas I was able to buy brand new rotors, both left and right rear calipers and pads for $320 roughly and it took me 3 hours to do myself with the help of a socket set. Brakes are a relatively easy task to tackle. Good Luck

Its very possible that the ABS system malfucntioning could cause extra/excessive wear on the rotors and/or brake pads. Has your ABS light came on on the instrument cluster? If so, does it stay on or blink? (Should come on with key in the on position then go off after cranking the car) It would be worth looking into I suppose...

It sounds like either the mixture is bad or you need a new 02 sensor. If you have never replaced the o2 sensor I would get that done anyway. Next I would get a general tune up and have your throttle body cleaned.

the lights should come on when you start the car, then go off about 10 secs after the engine fires.if it comes on at other times then it needs to go onto diagnostic computer.asap.

Chevy Cavalier 2001 ABS Brake problem

You don't say what brakes.

I have had many cavys and worked on them. Great cars.

Your problem sounds like a **** rear wheel cylinder and bad drums/rotors and abs sensor wire.

My car just did everything you describe, I put in new wheel cylinders, drums, brakes, rotors, and 2 new rear brake lines. For less than 200 bucks the car is like new again and has well over 100k.

You can do it yourself. Doesn't take special tools. I followed online how-to's.
