    Check two things:

Check for a wet passenger side floor area. If it's wet, then you have a bad heater core.

Check to see if your engine oil is white / milky. If it is, you have a blown head gasket, and water is getting into the oil.

You could also have a cracked or pitted head letting water into your cylinders .check to see if you are blowing water out of your exhaust if you rev slighty.this happenes if you do not use coolrant .straight water is not a good idea with aluminium heads, can cause corrosion

Mazda protege 5 2003 crank wont start

I purchased a used 2003 Mazda Protege w/170k on it. I knew it had a rod knocking at the time. It was still running. I bought a used motor 35k from Japan. I swapped everything But could never get it to run. I took it to the Mazda dealer (why not just flush cash in the toilet) They lied and said it needed a new computer.
Finally discovered that the harmonic balancer / lower pulley had Japanies spline for the crank position sensor. It ran great after I put the old pully on. In the intake the butterfly valves had come lose and fallen into the intake valves and shredded and then gotten into the crank. If you are hearing rattling remove your intake and you will find the butterfly valves have come loose.

2002 Mazda protege heater only blows cold air and engine is over heating. What could be wrong with this car?

1. See if simply adding coolant fixes it. 2. Try replacing the thermostat and the radiator cap. One way to check the thermostat is to start the engine and feel the upper radiator hose. The hose should not feel uncomfortably hot until the engine has warmed-up and the thermostat opens. If the hose does not get hot, it means the thermostat is not opening.
2. Look for antifreeze leaks, inspect the radiator, water pump and hoses. 3. If there are no leaks, and the above steps don't correct the problem, you might have a blown head gasket.

My 2001 mazda millenia ran hot, we put water in it and it still ran hot does it sound like the thermostat?

If your car ran hot, you may need to check the radiator for a leak. You always need to add antifreeze/coolant when you add water to your car. Check you owner's manual for the type they suggest and the proper mix of water to antifreeze/coolant. I had to get a head on my motor shaved when my car ran hot and later I had to get the hoses replaced. My radiator cap died following my replacing the radiator as it was plastic and when the car overheated it damaged the cap. How long was the car running hot? You don't want to be a penny wize or a pound foolish when it comes to engine overheating problems. You can repair on the cheap now and pay a lot more in the long run. Also, in the future when your car runs hot, you can turn on the heater --yes even when it is hot outside--I recommend opening up the windows. The heater fan will help to dissipate the heat from the car engine. It does work. I hope these help. Also go to a reputable repair shop. It could be your thermostat they can have check valves which get messed up but you need to check to see if it is your radiator or if there is a leak there or in a hose.

Heat/catalytic converter is on all the time but is dim, plugs in correctly?

if your catalytic converter is getting hot and smells it could just be time to replace it. they do wear out. the cataylist either loses it effectiveness or disintergrates. if your engine is running fine than this is probably your problem.

It could be head gasket, the water could be leaking into the cylinder/s. Is there excessive steam coming out of the exhaust?
