Good Evening, I would hope it is the belt or the alternator first because the belt tensioner is a bear to replace. I would recommend taking a better look at your belts first 80% of squeaking and squealing are from dirty, and old belts. And while you are changing it out you can spin each pulley by hand and see if there is one specifically making noise and go from there. Hope this helps.

2007 forester squells at start up and then quits in a few seconds

More than likely you have either a worn belt that need to be replaced or you have the belt tensioner freezing up. If you have more than 60,000 miles on it consider changing the belt, while you're at it look at the tensioner if it feels like it doesn't turn smoothly or has a lot of side to side play on the wheel then you'll need to replace it before it leave you stranded on the side of the road.

My daughters car is hard to steer and makes a loud squelling noise. What could this be?

Those cars have manual belt tensioners and sounds like it needs to be adjusted because it has stretched the belt.

1992 Pickup: loud squelling sound under hood when started...

Sounds like a loose belt.

There are a few things that can cause a belt to slip like that.

The belt could be not tightened all the way. If it uses a sepentine belt with a tensioner, the tensioner could be bad. If it is not a serpentine belt, then you will have multiple belts and the one that is making the noise can be loose. Use something to pry it tight and tighten down the bolts holding the component th belt goes to.

It can also be a bad pulley. Pulleys have bearings inside of them, at times the bearings will go out and make the pulley hard to turn. You can usually find this easily by taking the belt off and turning the pulley with your hand. If it is hard to turn or makes a grinding noise when is bad and needs to be replaced.

Old belts can also cause this along with a belt that is wet. There is a spray on Belt Dressing that helps get rid of noisy belts, but I consider that a bandaid to a bigger problem.

Squelling noise at idle on '99 explorer. new belt and new tensioner. problem is intermittent so i cant get a stethescope to accuratly determine problem. sometimes it seems to come from the tranny and...

try puffing a wd4 lube on one of those belts and see if the noise disappears, if it disappears then you must be using a belt with its width and thickness incorrect for your pulley.

How to change a altornator on a 95 nissan maxima

first you need to release the belt tensioner, and remove the belt. Disconnect the battery, and remove electrical plug on aternator. Then simply unbolt the old alternator, bolt in the new one, re-attach the the electrical plug, connect the battery back up, and re-install the belt. FYI this would be a good time to replace the serpentine belt.

Need to know how to put serpentine belt on 1999 tracker

Should be a belt diagram under the hood or ontop of the radiator shroud. As for how to put it on usually either the alternator has a tension screw (meaning the aternator pulle is used to tighten the belt (one side of the alternator is hinged and the other side has an adjustment)

The other type is an auto tensioner where one of the pulley as a spring ion it that tensions against the belt. IN this case youwill need to use a wrench to pull the pulley back to slip the belt over the pulley

pLease note that is is one or the other for the configuraation (not both)

Squealing noise (belt) and now the battery light is on. any idea what this could be?

Sqealing belt is loose belt. Battery light on could mean loose or failing aternator for same reason. If belt isn't loose, use belt dressing. If this is helpful, please rate as such. TY
