Question about 1997 Saturn SL

1 Answer

Major trouble getting the 5 speed to shift into gear. I have to shut the car off put in gear and then start it in gear with the clutch depressed. Is this a clutch problem, linkage or gear oil deficit in the manual transmission? Thanks

Good Evening, mostly your transmission is good. I would be questioning the the condition of your clutch disc, but first I would have to say clutch master and or slave cylinder. I have had a few run across the lot where the clutch master cylinder has leaked internally just up above your clutch pedal where the rod goes through the firewall. let me know what you find, and when was any clutch work done.

thanks actually I checked last wknd thinking the same that it could be trouble with the slave cylinder but the fluid level was right up there ...but what an impossible task to shift driving home. I was hoping and praying it was not the clutch. As yet I have not checked the trans for gear oil...how much is it to have a clutch installed assuming the pressure plate and throw out bearing are alright. Or is it recommended to replace the whole works when replacing the clutch plate???

The throw out bearing comes in the clutch set along with a pressure plate and a clutch disc, autozone sells them pretty decently priced. I have yet to have to get a flywheel resurfaced yet. It is a relatively simple job other than having to remove the sub frame. My words of advice are to ask your local parts store who they would recommend be sure to ask to talk to one of their commercial specialists that has been there a while. If not ask friends and family who they would recommend and get some prices. I always change everything with all the kit comes with, because it will last so much longer that way.

We have replaced 5 speed transmission everything is new clutch pressure plate a truck will shift while turned off and will not shift in gear while running whats wrong

Is clutch release linkage working? Installing clutch disc backwards will do this too. With engine off, put in gear, depress clutch pedal and turn engine by hand to see if clutch is still dragging.

My 87 Mazda B2000 has been parked down hill for 3 months. Now the motor starts but I cannot put it in any gear with the motor on. The stick shift will move into gears with the engine off.

sounds like the clutch has corroded somewhat.
does it feel like the clutch has some pressure?
try putting it in gear, depress the clutch, and then see if it will start in gear( be carefull it may jump forward)
this might free the clutch.
also the clutch fluid may have drained or have an air bubble, depressing the clutch many times quickly may self bleed the air out, or bleed some new fluid through it. make sure to top up the fluid.

1999 f150 4.2 5 speed won't shift. have to start

Have you checked the clutch master cylinder? If it is low on fluid it means you may have a leak possibly at the slave cylinder. Add fluid if needed and see if it improves.

Could be clutch is worn. Check shift fork. Also the throw out bearing should be replaced.

I have an 1989 GMC Sierra K1500(4x4)5-speed. grinds when going...

It may be the transmission input shaft bushing or bearing, located in the rear of the engine crankshaft, in front of the clutch assembly. If the bushing or bearing is dry (needs to be greased), the input shaft will still try to turn with the engine rpm, even though the clutch pedal is depressed. Also, the clutch disc may not be fully releasing, which could possibly be corrected by adjusting the clutch pedal linkage. good luck

Grinding gears from 1st to 2nd, 3rd to 5 ok

Either your clutch is getting bad, or you're shifting down too soon, and up too late. Try double clutching. Push in your clutch and push it into neutral. Release the clutch, fan the gas pedal, push the clutch again and shift into 1st. All this does is sychronize the speed of the transmission with the speed of the engine. There were, in the 60's, a lot of cars with the old "three on the tree" that you had to do this every time, and you get pretty good at it after a while.

check the linkage for excessive play if the rubbers are worn out replace them and if you can put the car on the hoist disconnect the linkage under , start the car with another person inside the car to depress the clutch , try each gear at a time to isolate the problem whether its from the transmission or the linkage.

1996 Geo Metro Clutch won't disengage

Hi,

In all likelihood two (2) possibilities:
  • defective clutch cable (most likely); and/or
  • defective clutch fork (least likely).
Should it be the cable, this might be of help. It is turns out to be the fork, you might need the services of a qualified professional or a dealership.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.
