Question about 1996 Chevrolet Blazer

Open Question

I have a 96 S10 Blazer with push button 4wd and it won't go out of 4 wheel drive. Tried all combos of fast, slow, neutral, but it's stuck. The 2 hi light flashes a few times but it stays in 4 hi. I can hear a clicking for a few seconds whenever I try- comes from somewhere behind the radio. Solonoid? The sound doesn't seem to be coming from the switch itself. I have a reman tranny with about 15m miles and use the 4 wheel drive at least once a week. Any help would be appreciated!

    OK Took it to a tranmission shop. He thought it was the "motor". He attached the scan tool but this model cannot be diagnosed with OBD11. We disconnected the vacuum line to the front axle and I drove it around like that for a while- it still said it was in 4wd but only the rear axle was driven.
    Working on another problem, I noticed there was a fuse for the 4wd. Replaced the fuse and voila! It now works fine. (after reconnecting the vacuum line) Sometimes the simplest of solutions......

SOURCE: 4 wheel drive wont swich back to 2 wheel drive

After reading some of the fixes here and on other forums,i bought a vacuum actuator and a transfer case switch.My mechanic came to fit these today,replaced the actuator and it didnt do anything.Turned out the old one was o.k..He couldnt find where the case switch went ,so he started tracing the vacuum pipes.
Guess what? he found not one ,but two broken pipes.he replaced/shortened these and hey presto,i now have 2,4 hi,4low and auto all working again.
It may be worth checking the vacumm pipes before buying other parts.
Just a thought...........

try putting in nuetral and then shift into high gear . if still does not work sounds like the 4x4 acctuator is bad

hey there i cant tell you what you are missing but i can tell you how to disengage the front wheels . ok you have a vacum line that runs right under the battery and a line that comes up from the front diff. to the same place ( you may have to remove batt and batt tray to get full access to this) un bolt it and temporaly put batt and batt tray back in start it up and decompress this and see if it comes out .... you should here clunking noise if it goes back in ... if thats the case just pull that big vaccum line off .... to test get all four tires off the ground and have some one put it in drive but dont hit the gas it should turn on its own ...if that dont work check the cable that runs down to the differental

How do you shift a 1995 blazer into 4 wheel drive


Hey Gilbert ,it should be easy sitting in drivers seat all the way forward is 2wd down one is 4wd high next one down is netural and last one down is 4wd low on older cars you may have to roll a little forward and roll a little in reverse to get it to in gauge , the sane when taking it out of 4wd

There should be a push button or knob should say 2 hi 4 hi 4 low . If there's no a knob or push button there's a shifter . I usually change into 4 wheel with the transmission in neutral or park.

Try going to 2WD while in neutral. Then take it to the shop to check it out.

I have a 1996 chevy blazer and dont know how to disengage from four wheel drive to two wheel drive?


As I recall the 96 blazer had electronic shifting for 2wd to 4wd. There should be a small panel on the drivers dash buttons for 2wd, 4wd lo and 4wd hi.

Simply press the desired button while stationary and if the system is functioning properly then it will shift and the light for the engaged type of drive will be lighted. Generally you would like to be in 2wd for this vehicle.

this sytem is shift on the fly!! you can engage and disengage from 2wd to 4wd at speeds up to 45-50mph, 4wd lo you need to be a complete stop some cars need to be in neutral with parking brake on and some need to be in gear there all different, consult your owner manual for correct shifting pattern to 4wd lo range

did you try completely stopping the vehicle, puttin the shifter in neutral, and putting it in and taking it out of 4-wheel drive?

Wont go into 4 wheel drive


For you to switch this vehicle from 4 wheel to 2 wheel or 2 to 4. You should follow these steps. TURN VEHICLE ON, PUSH ON BRAKE PUT VEHICLE IN NEUTRAL.STILL HOLDING BRAKE AND VEHICLE IN NEUTRAL PUT VEHICLE IN 4 wheel or 2 wheel if desired. IT SHOULD WORK. Good Luck

Having trubble ingageing the 4wd chevy s10 1988


It should shift into 4 high in any gear. 4 low you have to be in neutral. If the button doesnt push in, it could very well be the button.
