No there is no way to take and trade parts on them. ur best bet would to be try and make the tilt steering on work in there. if u look on ebay they make conversion kits to do this. they r fairly resonabile priced too

My steering column is loose on 1989 delta 88

All GM models use the same steering column until the late1990's. So please follow the instructions with pictures at the link below. I assume you have a tilt column.

I have a 97 olds 88 how do I change the ignition switch with diagram

up under dash, mounted basically on the side of the steering column

2 screws hold it to the column. sometimes easier to remove the nuts holding column up to dash, lower column down some till wheel on seat.

You remove the 2 small bolts holding switch to column, then there is a rod in the back for the key. Lift switch off rod, Alig new switch back on rod and mount new switch back on the column

It is adjustable to need to eb 100% you have it adjusted so it does NOT start in reverse or any other gear. Only park and neutral

its the top left in picture, shown.. tilt and non tilt very clse to same

1990 Jeep Cherokee 4.0l 6cly fuel inj.... recently my steering column has play into up/down and right to left. Steers fine, except it's loose. Key sometimes won't come out and the fuse on the instrument...

Hi, I know the problem well. Had 2 different columns apart recently. What happens is the star bolts holding the lower bearing assembly get loose. You have to take everything off to get to them. First the airbag, if you have one. You have to disarm it first by taking both cables off the battery and touching them together. With the airbag off, take the bolt off the steering wheel and use a puller to get the wheel off. Then the dust cover. With the cover off, you need a lockplate compression tool to push the lockplate down while you remove the locking clip. The lockplate comes off, then the the turn switch canceler, then the turn switch. You have to take the wand and hazard button off to get the switch out. There are then 3 screws holding the upper bearing housing on. First remove the key barrel set screw and remove the barrel. Then remove the 3 screws. Next, you have to pull the ignition switch linkage off the gear opposite the key barrel. The linkage looks like a big key. The housing then comes off and hangs on the turn switch. Make sure you catch the bearings if they are loose. At this point, if you don't have a tilt column, you may be able to see and tighten the star bolts. If you have the tilt column, you will have to take it off. There are pins in each side. An 8/32 screw can be screwed in and pried to pull the pins out. Take the adjusting rod off and the tilt mechanism will come off. The return spring and retainer will also be loose. Now you can tighten the bolts and put everything back together. Now, you're going to want to see some pics to help you. Fortunately, there are a lot of these out there. Here is one, but there are many more: http://www.epiccomputer.com/dale/jeepjunk/tilt/tilt.html . You will want to find one that's like yours--tilt if you have tilt or non-tilt if you don't. Please let me know if you have questions, and thanks for using FixYa.

2001 jeep grand cherokee laredo, lights come one intermittently, horn came on unexpectedly and wouldn't turn off. How do I fix that?

Lights intermittent can be caused by switch or relay. Try swapping the Low Beam relay with another similar relay (horn relay is a good choice) to see if that resolves it. These relays are in the Junction Block--may be under the hood or in the car but not in the big box by the battery). If this doesn't fix it, the problem is likely the headlamp switch.

Horn coming on is usually caused by a broken switch or stripped wire insulation inside the steering column. You would usually have to take the steering wheel off to fix it, and this requires special tools; however, if the problem happens to be under the steering column shroud, you may be able to fix it without taking off the steering wheel. Take the shroud off and see if you can follow the black/red horn wire. Follow it as far as you can to check for stripped insulation contact with any metal. If you lights switch is bad, you can also change that while you have the shroud off.

Please let me know if you have questions.

Wand Removal & Installataion

  1. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable.
  2. Remove the knee blocker from the instrument panel.
  3. Remove the three screws that secure the lower steering column shroud to the upper shroud.
  4. If the vehicle is equipped with a standard non-tilt steering column, loosen the two upper steering column mounting nuts. If the vehicle is equipped with the optional tilt steering column, move the tilt steering column to the fully lowered position.

Fig. Steering column shroud removal for the Cherokee

  1. Remove the two screws that secure the multi-function switch water shield and bracket to the top of the steering column.
  2. Remove the one screw located below the left multi-function switch control stalk that secures the multi-function switch water shield and bracket to the steering column.
  3. Gently pull the lower mounting tab of the multi-function switch water shield bracket away from the steering column far enough to clear the screw boss below the left multi-function switch control stalk.
  4. Lift the water shield and bracket with the left multi-function switch off of the left side of the steering column far enough to access the two instrument panel wire harness connectors for the left multi-function switch.
NOTE If the vehicle is equipped with the optional tilt steering column, lifting gently upward on the tilt release lever will provide additional clearance to ease left multi-function switch removal.
  5. Disconnect the two instrument panel wire harness connectors from the left multi-function switch connector receptacles.
  6. Remove the left multi-function switch and water shield from the steering column as a unit.
  7. Gently and carefully remove the water shield from the switch by pulling it over the hazard warning switch button and the left multi-function switch control stalk.

To install:
  1. Gently and carefully install the water shield onto the switch by pulling it over the hazard warning switch button and the left multi-function switch control stalk.
  2. Position the left multi-function switch and water shield near its mounts on the steering column as a unit.
  3. Reconnect the two instrument panel wire harness connectors to the left multi-function switch connector receptacles.
  4. Position the left multi-function switch onto its mounts on the left side of the steering column.
NOTE If the vehicle is equipped with the optional tilt steering column, lifting gently upward on the tilt release lever will provide additional clearance to ease left multi-function switch installation.
  5. Position the lower mounting tab of the multi-function switch water shield bracket to the steering column screw boss below the left multi-function switch control stalk.
  6. Install and tighten the one screw located below the left multi-function switch control stalk that secures the multi-function switch water shield and bracket to the steering column.
  7. Tighten the screw to 10 inch lbs. (1.1 Nm).
  8. Install and tighten the two screws that secure the multi-function switch water shield and bracket to the top of the steering column [Tighten the screws to 20 inch lbs. (2.2 Nm)].
  9. Position both the upper and lower shrouds onto the steering column.
  10. Install and tighten the three screws that secure the lower steering column shroud to the upper shroud. Tighten the screws to 18 inch lbs. (2 Nm).
  11. If the vehicle is so equipped, tighten the two nuts that secure the non-tilt steering column upper mounting bracket to the dash panel steering column support bracket studs. Tighten the nuts to 200 inch lbs. 22 Nm).
  12. Reinstall the knee blocker onto the instrument panel.

Blinkers do not work but when i put my brakes on my driver side blinker comes on and its a solid light

The symptoms for the driver's side sound like a missing or high resistance ground on the driver's side.
You will need to check both the front and rear Stop / Turn / Park sockets to find which one it is.

Once you have the ground confirm / corrected the non functioning turn signals, try raising the tilt steering wheel column all the way up and re-test. Some times the connector for the MFS ( aka MultiFunction Switch, turn signal lever ) behind the knee panel pulls apart. If this corrects the non functioning you need to pull the knee panel ( screws from bottom lip, and tab at the top by the cluster ) take a look for the connector :
df1aa0e.jpg

Pull the connector apart, and check for discoloration on the pins, and reassemble. Pull up some slack on the truck side ( vs the part that goes up the steering wheel column ) and zip tie it to the knee panel frame so it does not pull tight again.
