Question about 1982 Ford F 250

My 1982 ford f250 won't start.and we changed every thing from the key to the ciol safety switch duraspark cap roder and coil timing is good wires are good power to the coil no power to the plugs were is the short?

according to my info, primary voltage to coil should go hot with key on, there is a fusible link in that circuit.

1990 f250 won't start. Replace power module and distributor


Some models of the 'Duraspark' modules had defective programing and would 'go dead' on rare and unrepeatable conditions. You could 'clear' the condition by briefly switching (just a spark touch) the battery connections. IF it is getting fuel to the cylinders and ignition spark anytime--it WILL start or at least try to start.

Also check the fuel pump to be sure it is coming on.

I have a '78 thunderbird with a 351m clevland engine i changed out the distributer cap, put the sparkplugs in correct firing order and now it wont start it turns over but its not firing im thinkin


simple things first, did you put the rotor back in ? I would start by connecitng a timing light to one of the plug wires and have a friend turn the engine over and see if the light flashes. (I use a remote starter switch on fords but make sure the ****** is in park) If the light does not flash, connect the timing light to the coil wire. It should flash now. If it does, the plug wires might not be in the correct fireing order. if it does not , the problem should be under the cap if it was running before. if you dont have a timing light, lift the coil wire off of the cap and hold the conductor close to the cap, less than 1/4 inch. Have a friend crank the engine. You should see a blue spark. if you do, repeat with a spark plug wire. If you have spark, the wires are probably wrong. Be careful not to get shocked. It wont hurt you but wont feel good either. If you have no spark and everything is in order and the rotore is installed properly, disconnect the battery and remove the ignition box on the inner fender. Look at the bottom side. If it has an area that looks sandy (literally) replace it. This is common on the duraspark ignition systems.

78 f250 died while driving slow and wont start. getting fuel, coil fireing didnt check rotor or plugs, spin it over try to give it trottle backfires out tailpipe


Three things to try:

1) replace ignition switch located in column
2) replace ignition control module on firewall
3) if those don't work, check the pick up coil in the distributor

Did everything from changing the wiring loom from computer box to engine compartment, checked computer box which i had tested(ok),changed all the relays,put another distrubutor which i had tested(ok),fuel...


There's a fuse for the igntion, if it's blown it would cut power to the coil, check to see if the coil is firing by putting the coil wire [ make sure the ciol wire is good, they are known to fail ] close to a grounded part of the car. if it's working, then it may be a bad rotor, if not it may be the coil.


It would be good to list what the vehicle is.

No spark at plugs on a 1986 chevy pu with 350 is the coil bad or something else


to test whats wrong you need a test light 12 volt. It's an ice pick like tool with a clear handle and a ware with an alligater clip. hook the clip to ground near the ciol then with the key on the ciols small wires will be hot ( lights the light ) unplug the small wire plug at the coil and one wire will be hot the other cold. the one thats cold connect the test light and reconnect to the coil. crank the engine before cranking with the key on it should be lit cranking it should flash off and on quickly. All of this presoposes that the battery is well charged and cranks the engine good. if it just stays on then you need to verify that the distrubutor is turning, ( cap off look it it with it cranking it should turn if not the timing chain whent out. no flash and the distrbutor turns the crank senser 9 DISTUBUTOR PICKUP OR THE INGTION MODULE failed any of the wires can break too. Most auto parts stores can test the module before you buy a new one. module failure is common well motor no start. the pickup is not as common and if your not a regular mechanic then changing the distrubutor is easier. make sure that you put the new one in the same as the old one or it won't run. turn the engine till the rotor points straight to somewhere (front) pull the old on watching it turn as it comes out so you can turn the new one in at the same place put the cap back on and fire it up. The rebuilt distrubutor will have a new pickup and module. The coil can fail but not like a light switch. if the the ciol has power and the other side flases and theres no spark the coil is bad.

Truck troubles


The only thing between the coil and the plug wires, is the rotor and distributer cap.

Take the cap off and look for moisture, arcing, etc. The rotor can also have an embedded resistor. That you need an ohmmeter in order to check for continuity.
