Question about 2003 Chevrolet Malibu
You can get an owner's manual here for free http://www.ownersmanualsource.com/chevrolet/chevrolet-malibu-owners-manuals/ The light you are seeing is the Low Coolant Light. Check the coolant level in the overflow reservoir and fill it up with a 50/50 mixture of distilled water and Dexcool. If the reservoir is empty then remove the radiator cap and also fill the radiator. If it is very low then you have a leak somewhere. If you are seeing white smoke they the engine has a blown head gasket which will destroy the engine if not repaired ASAP. Stop driving the car until you service it.
