If you have a 3.3 or a 3.8 the most common problem is the crank sensor. when it cuts off if it starts right up or starts after cool down for a few min. youshould replace the crank position sensor

2001 express p0420 p0174 engine codes , help diagnose !

0174 is system too lean, right bank. 0420 is catalyst sytem efficiency below threshold, left bank. fix would be either oxygen sensor or catalytic converter replacement possibly would need both. note: this veh would possibly have up to 4 oxygen sensors, but cause of problem would be the ones coming off manifolds before the catalytic converter possibly in manifold or y-pipe/down pipe.

Stuck in 3rd, throwing codes 21,22,23. Will manually shift into second. 93 gc with 4.0 42re transmission

Code 21 is "O2 Sensor shorted to voltage"
Code 22 is "Engine coolant temperature sensor voltage low"
Code 23 is "Air intake temperature sensor circuit out of range" (Voltage too high or voltage too low)

I would personally work the codes from the lowest to the highest number. Shorted oxygen sensor circuits have been known to wreak all kinds of havoc with the powertrain control module. It could be the oxygen sensor itself, but be sure to check the oxygen sensor wires to make sure they are not shorted against the exhaust manifold or engine/transmission assemblies.

Fix one thing at a time, then disconnect the battery to reset the computer and drive the vehicle for a while to see if the other codes come back and to see if this helps your shifting problems.

If the other codes return, then you must diagnose each circuit and repair as necessary and retest between each step.

In year /model 87, code 23 was oxygen sensor stuck in full rich position. I'd be tempted to try a new one.
