Question about Lincoln Continental

1 Answer

My 62 lincoln runs fairly well for about 10 to 15 minutes and then starts to backfire and lose power to a stallout. Ive replaced the timeing gears and chain, changed the carb and fuel pump and backblew the fuel lines with compressed air. the timeing is set at 10 degree advanced. everything seems to check out ignition wise . if i leave it alone after a stall it will restart in about 2 minutes, not near enough time to cool the engine down. help!

Replace your coil. This happens on these older vehicles a LOT as the oil begins to evaporate out of the ignition coil. My '54 GMC used to LOVE to do this.

Chevy venture stalled

Compression, spark , timing , fuel for any engine to run. Don't forget a stopped up catalytic convertor will have the same effect as you described. Backfiring of course is fouled plugs, bad plug wires, look for arcing from wires when it is dark outside. If it has a distributor check for cracked cap, had my 91 GMC start backfiring then die due to ignition module inside distributor going bad. It would start back up after it cooled for about 10 minutes.

1997 grand cherokee keeps acting like losing power, backfires and randomly shuts off and now it wont start again...any suggestions??

timing belt may have slipped. usually if the engine starts to back fire and then lose power the timing belt is loose. would check this and replace if it looks suspect. also timing belts should be changed at a certain time or miles witch ever is the grater. average is 4-6 years on a engine that don't do meany miles 2-4 years on a heavy run engine.

Check your intake and exhaust modules. I have a 1987 D21 and had the same problem (if I understand your post). I replaced the modules located behind the driver side headlights and it fixed the problem. Good luck! I hope this helps.

what you realy need to do is check your fuel pressure. it sound like a fuel pressure regulator . but ive also seen a dirty fuel system and defective fuel pumps do the same thing.
