Did the check engine light come on and are all the flild levels like their supposed to be? oil, coolant, trans fluild? Has the car had any recent service? You describe that the trans only operates in Low gear. does the car back up Ok? Does the battery have the normal amout of cranking power? If the altenator quit the systems would go into limp in but the check engine light should have come on. Do you have a scanner? If you don't show up at most major auto parts stores and they'll hook a code reader to the computer and see what the systems are complaining about. the neutral saftey switch is on the side of the transmission and it's connected to the shaft that shifts the gears if it's not reporting what gear is selected to the transmission controller then it will only use low gaer. The neural switch is affected by trans fluild leaking into it so if it appears to have some trans fluild on it ( even a little bit the switch may have failed) The auto parts store may be able to see what the codes are. if an EGR code or overheating code is in the system and you may be able ( with the scanner or code reader) to clear the codes and it'll work normally. if the codes return then they need to be addressed and the problem corrected, Overheating the switch and speedsenser problems ( Is the ABS light on?) willl make the trans not shift and fluild problems Leaks and burnt up are also possible. The fuses all have to be good you wouldn't think that the cigar lighter fuse has to be good for it to shift gears correctly but it does.

Wont shift into overdrive, high rpms to shift

run the fault codes before you tear into the tranny as the recorded fault will pinpoint exactly what you have to fix. Most likely a faulty TCM or a od servo/solenoid.

My 06 explorers rpms go up and down when driving

yes it is . it is 2 sensors in the transmission. the first would be your 2nd and 3 nd shift solenoid and the other is your overdrive

O/D Off light goes off and on

the overdrive is the 4th gear. considering that it may not be an issue with your computer switching gears to fourth but an issue with the transmission itself. this light could be a signal instead of and engine warning light where the engine is fine but the transmission isnt.

2001 montana won,t runs about 2800rpms @70 don,t seen to be going into overdrive on adown hill slope when in overdrive with the shifter it drops the rpms down to 700rpms , and when you put the shifter into...

I think I understand the question. These transmissions are known for the 4th speed shaft shearing off the splines. 4th being overdrive. This won't let it shift into overdrive and also no engine breaking when you are coasting. In other words, when you are coasting your engine rpms will drop down to idle speed. So when in 3rd or drive manual, you do have engine breaking and the rpms fall slowly. The transmission is gonna have to come out to be repaired. I hope this helps.

What is the o/d button on top of automatic gear stick for please

Over Drive..... Generally speaking, overdrive (OD) is the highest gear in the transmission. Overdrive allows the engine to operate at a lower rpm for a given road speed. This allows the vehicle to achieve better fuel efficiency, and often quieter operation on the highway. When it is switched on, an automatic transmission can shift into overdrive mode after a certain speed is reached (usually 70+ km/h [43+ mph] depending on the load). When it is off, the automatic transmission shifting is limited to the lower gears. For an automatic transmission, it is almost always best to select overdrive and allow the transmission to control engagement of the overdrive. (It may be necessary to switch it off if the vehicle is being operated in a mountainous area or when towing a trailer.) With a manual transmission, overdrive should usually be selected when the average speed is above 70 km/h (approx. 43 mph).

2003 honda civic you drive on the street with D or

Drive the vehicle in "D". The D selection is the overdrive. You can consider the overdrive as a fourth gear. The D3 is simply third gear, and if driven in D3, the transmission will never shift into overdrive when needed.

The rpms are too high, is this normal when driving 70 mph and rpms are at 2500

if you had 4:10 gears in the rear axle maybe. but i,d say your over drive is out. your truck should be running at about 2100 rpms or a little less at 70.

sounds like you have lost over drive. this means your transmission is begining to fail. next you will lose 3rd,or drive. when this happens it will only go to second gear. head strait fo a shop. only a matter of time for a rebuild. no quick fix. sorry, good luck.
