Question about 1996 Jeep Cherokee

96 jeep cherokee sport starting problems

Jeep starts first time in am. Back up to dock at work turn it off and it doesnt start. no click, no crank, nothing, interior lights and radio work. Turn ignition 8-10 times and it finnally starts up. Does this 3-4 times when i turn it off. Weird part. Rest of the day no problems. Mechanic repaired it with a new starter, battery tested ok, connections ok, wires ok, alternator ok. Next day, no problems. Next day right back to same routine. Very fustrating. Took it back to mechanic, he cleaned some connections and the battery connections but it did it the next morining. Any ideas?

Try the wiring harness that attches to your ignition switch. Check for burn marks. also if it is auto check ur inhibiter switch located at the bottom of shifter under console

Hey I have a 96 grand Cherokee aswell I had the same prob. When you turn the key to the on position does the dash light say your out of gas but you know your not? If so it's your crank shaft position sensor a $60 part it's located above the tran so youll have to lower not drop it to get to it. Shouldn't take more than 30 mins to do hope I was able to help an good luck

My 1996 Jeep Cherokee has problems starting. sometimes it sounds as if it is going to start but it shuts down. other times you can keep cranking but it doesn't start. the fuel pump works fine. what...

this could be the crank position or cam position sensors. Also antitheft device if installed

If check engine light is on do a self test.

turn key off-on, off-on, off-on. the check engine light will blink out codes in pairs of numbers; 5-5 being the end of the test. Or the codes will display on a digital odometer. Do not start the car when doing the test- just turn key until the dash lights come on then one click back for "off".

Google your findings, if any, for possible solutions.

I would tend to agree its very possible you have a bad starter. You could remove it and have it tested. Most of your local auto parts stores do this for free.

It could be your Crank Shaft Sensor. That's what it was on my 99 Cherokee Sport the first time that happened.
