Looses rpm while driving

While driving my car for a short time the drive train started jolting, like it had an electrical intermittent, and then stalled when I came to a junction. Tried to re-start but would not fire. I then held the accelerator to the floor and tried gain. After about 20 seconds there was a load squeal and the engine began to rev up, but only to 3000rpm. It was coughing and spluttering but I put it in gear to see if I could move. With the accelerator to the floor the car crawled along at about 10mph for a short distance then suddenly the engine rev-ed up to 6000rpm and took off. After I parked the car I restarted it (no problem) I checked the exhaust looking for clues. There was nothing visibly unusual but the exhuast was very hot.

Thanks for your response. Actually it was the second time it happened on the same day. What kind of blockage are you suggesting?

Thanks again for a quick response. A fuel blockage makes sence since it is easy to flood a rx7 if turned over for long without firing. Fuel pump and filter was changed less than a year ago, so should be good. I'll take a look at the wiring. Thanks again.

I had something similar happen, my clutch was just worn out. The car stalled on me, (for another reason), and couldn't turn it back on with the key (flooding), so I left it alone for a minute or two, and then I was able to turn it on. I had the clutch replaced and everything was fine.

possibly a fuel blockage? try replacing fuel filter and check your fuel pump even run a fuel treatment also inspect the engine wiring and clean contacts where necessary inspect rotor button and dizzy cap even inspect spark plugs and the color of your exhaust tip if its burning properly should be a light grey color if its black its running to rich same with plugs also if you want to be sure chuck it on a machine like at ultra tune or somewhere like that other areas to explore you could try mazda rx7 chat forums hope this helps

Hi Tyler, difficult to say without more details, but it sounds to me like the sensor monitoring the RPM for the engine management unit is faulty and the engine management cannot compensate. Bad connections will give more problems during cold times because metal shrink and connectors might loose contact. Best would be to get it checked out by someone that knows for your safety, this sounds very unpredictable and dangerous. Hope this helps.

After stopping theres a jolt in the drivetrain

check that you are not in 4 wheel drive H and on hard stand ( hard surface ) The jolt may be from drive train torque wind up releasing on the stop motion . wheel drive should only be used on loose surfaces --- mud--gravel---snow --ice or any surface that will allow the tyres to unwind the torque build up.by slipping

This fault will not cause any driveability related symtoms, it just turns on the check engine light. But that is not saying it is impossible. She a trained technician and have further dianostics run on the code.

It sounds like you have a loose connection or wire somewhere, becuase you stated it started happening after you hit a bump which the jolt would cause movement in a component or wire causing some type of short or mis-connection to happen. I would check all wires, cables for loose or corroded connections, loose ground wires, especially battery and starter connections and tighten accordingly.

I would guess you have a corroded wire coming off your battery's positive terminal.

Surges in RPM while at idle

It may be one of two things. A intermittent problem with the idle air control sensor or the throttle position sensor. Have the cars computer scanned at a local auto parts store to see if there is a pending code that has yet to turn on the check engine light.

There is a small jolt when shifting from Park to reverse. What does this mean?

Is there a "clunk" noise that goes along with the "jolt" ?
It is either a loose or worn, mount, or you may have a drive train problem.

The main relay also controls the transmission and will cause an intermittent interruption of power and indicates its going bad. about a $60.00 replacement cost. the relay is located under left side of dash.
