If it looks like mayonnaise either on the oil cap or radiator cap you will have a blown head gasket. don't run it or bigger problems will occur.

Tip

Overheating

All Nissan Pathfinder owners experiencing overheating problems constant or intermittent should always check the coolant level before considering any other factors, including the replacement of parts such as the thermostat, sending unit, gauge, water pump, etc. While those parts do sometimes fail or malfunction, the problem can only be correctly diagnosed if the vacuum coolant system is first purged of all residual air trapped within the system, and the coolant is at the required full level. Any time the radiator cap, or reservoir cap is removed, or any other opening of the system, all air entering the system must be removed and the coolant topped off to ensure that the engine temperature will be within the normal range. While the methods used to do this may vary, it is best to check and recheck when the engine is cold until the coolant level holds halfway between the min and max level on the reservoir tank.

1997 Nissan Sentra overheating and will not hold water/coolant. No visable leaks??

I would suspect that the coolant is escaping via a bad head gasket or a crack into the lubrication system. Look at the underside of the oil filler cap and the dipstick for foamy residue. If not then it is escaping via the same conduits into the combustion system. Check the exhaust pipe for sweet coolant odor, white or green tinted exhaust, and coolant residue inside the pipe end itself. There are also test kits which can detect even small amounts of oil and combusted gas in the coolant as the leaks tend to go both ways.

Engine overheats and I've changed the water pump already along with the thermostat. What could be the problem?

many things can cause an engine to over heat
Look for any collasped water coolant hose. That will cause overheating'
If the inside of the engines oil cap looks to have a creamy filling in it that will be from coolant mixing with the engine oil. Head gasket leak and can cause overheating
A clogged up heater core or radiator can cause overheating
A loose or worn seal on the radiator fill cap can cause overheating as well

Can a worn out coolant cap cause overheating

There is no radiator cap on the Northstar engine.
The only cap is on the surge tank (or expansion tank) and is pressurized.

So the answer is Yes, a faulty surge tank cap will result in the loss of coolant and therefore lead to overheating.

The most common overheating problem with the Northstar engine is a blocked purge line(small hose). The purge line is designed to purge air out of the cooling system.
There is a small diameter hose coming from near the top of the coolant tank (not the cap) ,this is the purge line.
With the engine idling, pull the purge line from the tank,if there is no coolant flow from this small hose,it is blocked and this will cause overheating.
If the hose is clear, check for blockage at the nipple on the tank.Or trace the hose back until you find the blockage.
The hose goes in to the engine to a crossover and comes out the other side close to the thermostat housing, the blockage may be there.

Recently had intake gasket replaced and coolant keeps overflowing out of resivoir and car overheats . someone told me that it might be the cap on the resivoir?

If you haven't changed the thermostat that would be my first step. A stuck thermostat could definitely cause oerheating.
Look inside your oil filler cap and on the oil dipstick. See if there is a creamy light colored residue. Those could be symptoms.
By intake gasket do you mean intake manifold gasket? The gasket that could cause overheating would be the head gasket. A head gasket leak can usually be detected with a compression test - you may be able to rent a compression tester from a parts house. A cracked head could cause similar symptoms. A defective or even missing cap would not likely cause the problem you describe.

Why does the water boil in my car 2001 lincon we've changed the thermostat and put a new radiator cap on and put antifreese in it

Unfortunately, you could have a blown head gasket.
Check the coolant for oily residue.
Also, check the oil dipstick to see if the oil foams - which is an indication of water seeping from the water jacket into the cylinders.

Also, do a vacuum pressure test. You might have a carbon buildup, which is causing your car to overheat.

Is your oil changed regularly? Dirty oil causes overheating. Also, make sure the oil is up to the proper level.
