Question about 1999 Chevrolet Camaro

1 Answer

I just put a 4L60E transmission in my 1999 SS Camaro. The tranny came out of a wrecked 2000 Z28 and had been sitting in a shop for approximately 5 years. The motor and tranny had been rebuilt but not sure how many miles it had on it when it was wrecked. I had it installed and it seems to shift fine but when I checked the fluid it has a nasty strong smell?? Not sure what it is but it is strong and I think I can smell it when the car is running also??? Not sure. It doesn't smell burnt but need some ideas. I know without smelling it, it could be hard to figure out. I just noticed it today as I had some noise I think come from the tranny like a clunking but I couldn't get it to do it again. I will probably take it in Friday or Saturday as I am gettng a powerbrake booster put in this weekend. Please advise, Thanks JT

I had the transmission fluid changed and also the filter replaced after the tranny was installed and it run good and shifted good and just noticed the smell a couple of days ago. Had the tranny installed 9/21/2010. Thanks JT

Sorry, but it sounds by the smell, that you lost a clutch pack or burnt a drum up.
I used to own a trans shop,so I hope I'am wrong once in awhile, for your sake

Will a 1994 4L60E camaro transmission fit into a 1999 chevy 1500 ?

I doubt it. Most of the time the truck trans has the mounts in a different place and the tail shaft is a different size.
A trans shop or a salvage yard should be able to tell you for sure. Salvage yards have interchange info.

I haveca 99 ss camaro with the 4l60e transmission. It has all the gears and shifts fine, but if I get on it in first or second gear it feels slugish like its not putting all the power to the ground. It...

May be its not the transmission at all,The only thing that can get close to doing that would be the transmission , Temperature sensor, or Transmission fluid pressure, The PCM uses the temperature sensor to determine shift pattern and to engage and disengage your TCC(trans toruqe convertor) then there is the Trans fluid pressure sensor, but you said sluggish and stop when it get up in RPM . 4L60E. leave the transmission out of the picture, This car has a MAF and a MAP sensor these are two that you need to be questioning, Either of these 2 sensor take in false air especially when you first start out will make the engine run sluggish till it gets in RPM and not always, Then There is the EGR, that if the pintle doesnt seat it will affect both sensor and can open and not close especially at low RPM till it get more RPM. You are a what the call a speed density engine so look for vacuum leaks look at the MAF and see if the air duct is loose and since your there check the air filter, look at the hose of the MAP see if it that has any broken ,or vacuum leaks try these first

My 99 z28 was stolen. My whole rear end of the body was wrecked. I need another body. I have looked everywhere. Where can I find an affordable body style, with T-tops for a 99 z28 camaro?

Contact just about any salvage yard they are linked via network and can find the nearest rear clip for you. You probably won't be able to get a complete body due to title issues from them. next thing is another car dump this one.

Do you have to loosen the motor mounts to remove a transmission from a 1999 SS Camaro? I had a transmission replaced and then I found one of my wire harnesses with the positive battery cable loose and...

if they were replacing the transmission yes they had to pull off all the sensors connected to the tranny and then pull some off the motor to get the old tranny out new in they should replace the harness if they left it loose which they probably did and they had to pull battery wires to replace tranny

How to undo transmission lines on a 4l60e

my experience is on a 2000 camaro. There was a wire clip you gotta undo on the tranny. It's just like pulling the crank off a roll up window.

Take it to a transmission shop that has a Tech 2 scanner. The tech 2 scanner will not only scan the transmission but can also recalibrate the shift points. Other reason to why it wont shift under WOT it low transmission fluid pressure so check the fluid level and have a pressure test done on the line.
The 4L60E is a great transmission but there are some things that don't work well with them like some shift kits. The ECM is program the shift points which get's messed up if done wrong. best upgrade on the 4L60E was to swap out the servos for corvette servos or after market performance one's all for under $100.00 and in most case better then a after market shift kit.
Good luck and hope this help. take care not to burn up the transmission.

Loud noise sometimes ocurs when excelerating or braking. sounds like metal draging , but it is not.

Does it make a thudding sond on the shifter....Frist off is it 6-speed or auto, and is it a 5.7/z28/ss or base model...Could be rear tranny mount which is located on the crossmember of the car...If you put it in drive hold your foot firmly on the brake and accel, slowly only to about 2krpms, have a friend look under the middle of your car and watch for the trannie to buckle up towards the back half shaft.....Get back at me with this info..I own 7 camaros, i can def help you w/ this....

Gear Jerking in Camaro z28

first of all you need to fix the motor mounts drive shaft hangers and the lower control arm bushings and if you still have a transmission problem . it is in the valve body in the transmission you need to bring it to a good transmission shopas this will be a major tranny overhaul
