If it was a cv joint you would probably hear it while driving. The tie rod end or ball joint is probably bad, and it will clunk when it is torqued over. Climb under the car and grab a hold of these parts and see if you can wiggle them. One of them has got to be flopping around. Check it out.

It could be a number of problems relating to the suspension, ie ball joint, shock absorber, steering rack....

The thing is how to test...do you know which side of the vehicle is coming from, is it at speed or driving realy slow in reverse, is it when its cold, or hot, icy, wet....many factors can help narrow the problem down.

My 96 range rover 4.0 SE makes a clunking noise when i take off only after it build speed it is totally quiet ...i was told to change the differential and did ...still hear the clunking and hesitation when...

Likely to be either a propshaft Universal Joint, or possibly a Constant Velocity Joint in the front axle.

Is it more of a noise when starting off (and moving slowly) when turning hard to the right or left? Whichever direction is worse, that side is the first place to check (the Constant Velocity CV joint in the swivel housing)

If both directions sound the same , check the propshaft joints.

199 Mercury Mountaineer making clunking noise when turning

Hi Jeanette, I'm glad to help!

Jeanette, usually when your turning a vehicle and it makes a clunking noise, it could be 2 things. (1) The CV Joints are bad. What is a CV Joint? If you look under the vehicle you will see a long axle coming from the transmission to the center of you wheel and on each end of that axle you'll see a rubber boot. Jeanette, behind that boot is the CV Joint and when you turn the vehicle it pivots with the wheel. When it goes bad it will make all kinds of noises and can be unsafe if it breaks while on the highway because your vehicle will stop moving. PLEASE GET THAT CHECKED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. (2) The other problem it could be is your wheel bearings, when they become loose enough they can actually bind and cause a popping or clunking noise. This can also be unsafe if they are extremely loose. PLEASE GET THAT CHECKED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Hope this helps and have an awesome day Jeanette.

I have a clunking noise in my steering when I turn the wheel at low speed

You need to replace the CV shaft boots. They're cracked and leaking grease that keeps your wheel bearings and CV joints lubed. If you keep driving, extensive damage may occur creating more issues!

I have a 1997 toyota rav 4 that makes a clunking noise whenever I turn the wheel. What is it?

Hi

Is it a clunk clunk clunk noise? Then you have a CV joint that needs to be replaced. This is called the CONSTANT VELOCITY JOINT, and helps you turn the wheel when it is in motion.

It has ball bearings inside and when the housing wears out, they make that clunking noise.

See your mechanic for a change and see if you can replace both wheels at the same time.

Hope that helps.

Happy motoring.

My left front tire makes a rubbing or grinding noise when I drive. When I turn the wheel either way it also rumbles and bangs. What is causing this?

You could have a bad wheel bearing or a bad CV joint. Inspect your CV joint by turning the wheel all the way to the left and inspect the rubber boot for any signs of damage and see if there is any play by grabbing the CV joint and try to move it.
The other way to check is to drive the van slowly in an empty parking lot turning the wheel to one side and then the other. Listen for any abnormal noise and see if you can feel anything lose through you steering wheel.
If there is any signs of damage to the CV joint like oil leaking or movement. Replace the CV joint as soon as possible, and try not to drive the van till you have the CV joint replaced or the wheel bearing. Total CV joint failure will cause you to have the van towed to have it replaced. Try to drive it to the Garage to save you the tow cost.
Thank you for using fixya and be safe.

Cv joint question

Stationary lock to lock turning, will not damage the CV joints, they are designed to turn in this manner, to test a CV joint to see if it has damage, go to an empty parking lot, stop the car, turn the steering wheel full left, accelerate kinda hard, do you hear a clicking or clunking noise? repeat in reverse and on the right hand side. Any noises and your CV joints may be worn, also inspect the CV boots for tears and leakage by turning full left and looking at the boot, then full right. Hope this helps, let me know

Grinding noise changes with speed stops when turned right. replaced left front wheel bearing. noise is still there. whats wrong ?

Does sound stop when you turn LEFT?

Turning RIGHT puts the heavy load on the LEFT front wheel.
That initially STOPPED the noise, correct? So why did you change L?

Turning LEFT puts the load on the RIGHT. Did you change the RIGHT?

Let's say this:
If turning RIGHT stops the noise, it's the RIGHT one that's likely bad.
If turning LEFT stops the noise, it's the LEFT one that's more likely bad.

Make sense? Turning RIGHT loads the LEFT wheel; and vice-versa as the WEIGHT SHIFTS AWAY FROM THE TURN.

More than likely it is what some folks call a CV joint problem, not wheel bearings. Try backing up and then going forward to see if "clunking sound" or a sharp "bang" is heard. Wheel bearings and CV joints only work if smooth. Sometimes a BEARING RACE is bad. Also, a bad spindle / part of the CV joint / transaxle assembly worn or badly machined. If in a WET ENVIRONMENT especially, u may want to try marine grade grease or teflon-added grease.

Does sound come from POWER STEERING PUMP area?
