Good Evening, So you are going to replace yoru starter. Honestly removing the upper intake is not bad, however I do recommend new gaskets and be sure to look at the neck between the throttle body and the rest of the upper manifold. With general knowledge and some puzzle solving skills removing that intake is your biggest thing to do since the starter sits right below it. I can help you through it if you have problems.

.how does something like this happen? I mean what do i fix to prevent this again?

You will need to replace the starter pinion gear (if possible, without replacing the entire starter) and the flywheel at the same time. Make sure they are secured properly and not loose. Use loctite 242 on all the bolts. Could still happen again, but highly unlikely.

There is a grindind noise when trying to start my 1999 cadillac deville.. we are thinking it is the starter but is not sure where the starter is located

The starter is under the intake manifold on top of the engine. You have to remove the intake to gain access! I know stupid right!? You may also have a bad Flywheel so check it really good. Once you remove the starter (after you remove the intake) you will be able to see the flywheel.

1999 cadillac catera won't start (battery ok). my engine light stays on and there is sometimes a clicking sound from the steering wheel column. any suggestions?

Starter or starter solenoid. Turn the key to start, put a test light on the ignition wire on the starter solenoid, if you have power then it's a bad starter.

How to change starter on cadillac deville with northstar 1999

You have to remove the intake manifold as the starter is just underneath it.
Removing the starter itself is quite easy once you have the manifold off.

Unfortunately, removing the manifold is a right royal pain in the back side!!!.
I can list the removal procedure as per the factory workshop manual if you wish?.
The good news is that you do not need to work under the car, everything is done on top.
