Is it possible for part of the vss buffer to work, but not the other outputs? Speedo works fine, but tranny sometimes shifts into 'limp mode' and will not upshift.

GOOD discriptoin but its tough to say .
Your not getting codes sometimes you don't if its not that big of a problem YET.
But it sounds like you may be heading for one.
May best guess is their is an internal valve that isn't working correctly or mabey a clogged filter .But it sounds like it can be fixed with out to much expence if you do it now
Take it to a transmission shop before its to late

I have a 1991 Isuzu Rodeo and i cant find a speedometer cable at a parts house. does my truck even have a speedometer cable or is it called something else?

Hello.....well...unfortunately....this is generally a Dealer only part..There are some universal cables that some aftermarket stores can get...but there is just too much guess work could be too long...too short...some work with 2 wheel drive....some work with 4 wheel drive...Yea....your best bet is to check with an Isuzu dealership to be sure to get the right speedometer cable....Ok...I hope this was helpful....let me know how it goes....PEACE!!!!!

Speedometer, odometer frozen

there is a steel braided cable located at the back of your speedo panel that connects it to the tranny, this cable rotates from the point it connects to the tranny and transmits it to your panel. this cable may have snapped. pull out the panel, take out the cable and replace.

Check the cable near the transmission block , the transmission located at the back of engine. Check any unconnected port.

1990 Chevy Calavier speedometer works only some of the time

Either the gauge is toast...or more than likely, your cable is having problems at the tranny. Check for damage to the cable at the transmission housing. And, if you have speed ratio attachment where the cable goes into the tranny....that might be going bad.

1995 honda accord speedometer and odometer not working

Sounds like either your speedometer cable, your nylon gear on the side of the tranny where the cable ties in, or the odometer itself is shot. One of those three will set you straight. If you are able, remove the cluster, take the cable off the back, and pull it out of the sheath. You will see if its broken or not from there. If not, slide it back into the sheath, then you have to find out where the sheath meets the tranny, and pull it off of there. Then, you can get someone else to watch the speedo as you turn the cable from the bottom. If it works, great, if not, then its your cluster/odometer/speedo. If it does work, the small gear in the transmission is shot.
