Question about 1978 Ford Granada

1 Answer

The paint on my '78 Ford Granada (silver metallic) is heavily oxygendized. I have used a quality rubbing compound to remove it; however, after I wipe off the compound, the paint is blotchy, streaked, and dull (I've tried leaving the compound on for various intervals--same result). Thinking that a quality wax would eliminate the flaws, I applied some. All that did was make them even more evident. Finally, I tried spraying water on the "compounded" areas. That eliminated the flaws and turned the water black. So. . .would it be a good idea to wash the car thoroughly after it has been "compounded" and before waxing? I will value and appreciate your help.

I used Meguiar's "Ultimate Compound." Is that considered a "polishing compound"?

Good Evening, after you compound it good, I would tell you meguiars hand polish would be something to work with because it will put the oils back into the paint. That is only something a good polish will do, a good wax will just wax the surface to let the water bead up and come off easier. Hope this is helpful.

How can i remove scratch from the bodyof my car without spending lot of money

providing scratch isnt too deep you can buy a cutting compound from local factors and polish out. If a little too deep for this you can take back with a super fine wet and dry paper of around p1500 grade with plenty of soapy water first and then compound out but be careful not rub through to primer so very much a game of patience and compromise. If scratch is deep follow same instructions but day or so before touch in scratch to fill the scratch with paint and then carefully compound outer excess touchup so you simply leave paint in scratch.

Someone spraypainted my car how do I remove it?

Depends on the paint.
Most of the time you can use rubbing or polishing compound to "rub" the spray paint off.
As for the sugar, if you have not cranked the engine yet, or turned on the key, you may be able to take the gas tank off and clean it out without having to flush the fuel lines.

My wife inherited a '78 Ford Granada. It has the original silver paint. I tried to wax it, but it became obvious that it is heavily oxidized. I then tried rubbing compound, and after only a few circular...

Yes you will need to use a rubbing compound to have any chance of shifting all those years of residue.

There is a very good video walkthrough below on how to restore old faded and oxidised paint.

Please do leave a vote for the solution. Thanks.

How are the struts (horizontal rods) that hold up the trunk lid arranged on a '78 Ford Granada? One of the struts has become detached; hence, the trunk lid won't stay up. I have tried to re-install it...

It goes in the opposite of the other one. You have to twist it real hard and then slip it in the slot. I use 2 pair of vice grips to twist it. I hold it with one and then reposition the other to get more rotation. Rotate and switch until it's rotated enough to slip in. Does this make sense?

Dim Headlights

You can polish the headlight lenses to make them clear again. You can buy a kit with polishing compound and a buffing wheel, or use the same polishing compound that you use to take scratches and haze out of your cars paint, or silver, brass or copper polish would work as well. You can even mix some tooth paste and baking soda, use a damp rag and rub the paste over the lens buffing really hard and fast, then wipe the lens off and buff it with a clean dry rag. Do one lens at a time and the tooth paste polish trick takes more work than polishing compound but it does work.

Sounds like you may have accidentally removed the vacuum line to the modulator valve on the back of the transmission. (worst case, the headers may have burned through the hose, but either way, this is more than likely the problem.
Hope this helps
Chris.

hi from uk i am going to pass on to you an old remedy that a body spray painter passed on to me when i had a silver cortina 1600E in my youngr days and it does work ! if you obtain a tin of liquid metal polish ie brasso or carr day and martins metal polish pour a generouse amount onto a soft cloth then do a panel at a time ie front wing ? rub polish in straight lines only over panel apply firm pressure and be careful not to miss anywhere ? doing this removes all old wax polish and enhances the silver shine then wash panel with warm soap water of metal polish then leather or dry off ? you will feel the difference in texture of paint surface this requires lots of patience to do it right over all the cars body work afterwards use only wash wax liquid and rinse each wash not wax polish this remedy works magic on red painted cars that have turned pink matt ? using this method removes all old wax polish which has created pink due to sunlight as you may have noticed on other cars i hope you try this remedy at least on one panel? then look forward to your update/opinion on this ? best wishes from n/west uk

Rear Bumper Cover

you would need to heat it up from behind to remove the dent and the rubbing compound should work as long as it hasnt penetrated your paint layer
