The backup light switch is located o just right above the edge of the transmission pan on the driver's side .there is three wires hooked up to it.
To check if your switch is bad simply connect the two outer wires together with a paper clip or a piece of other wire, then turn the ignition on and look at the backup lights, if they are on that means that probably (99%) switch itself is bad need to replace .Of course you need to check the light bulbs and fuses first.

Please accept the solution if it's helpful. Do get back to us for any further query.

Thanks for contacting

Is this a manual or automatic, makes a big difference. Id it is a automatic the backup light switch is part of the range selector switch, if it is a manual it will be on the side of the transmission, I can show you both parts in pictures below.

1996 Nissan Pathfinder v6 5 speed back up light switch position

The switch that controls the backup lamps on a 1996 Nissan Pathfinder looks completely different and is in a slightly different location depending on whether the vehicle is equipped with a manual or automatic transmission. However, in ether case, the switch is located on the transmission.

On the manual transmission it is called simply, "backup switch".
On the automatic transmission it is part of the "inhibitor switch". (also known as "neutral safety switch")

Where is the back-up light switch physically located? Is there a diagram available that shows the location? My Haines manual does not show it.

Hello jack isuzu
If you have a manual trans. with a 3.2 it's on top of the trans. if you have a 2.2 it's on the right side of the trans. My diagram does not show a seperate switch for the backup lights on an automatic
transmission, it may be part of the trans. gear position switch on the left side of the transmission.
Look for a red+yellow wire from the rear of the truck to the transmission, this wire runs from the
backup lights and you should be able to follow it back to the switch. Hope this is helpful.

Its on the transmission but depending if its an automatic or manual trans changes the parts price and location. Manual trans has a two pin switch in the top of the trans for about $100 automatic has a multifunction switch located by the gear selector on the side of the transmission for about $200
