The check engine light/service engine soon (yellow light) comes only when the computer control unit (called the PCM) senses a fault in the electronic controls of the engine and/or the emission system, this can be as simple as a loose gas cap, u will seldom feel the car engine run any different, there are about 200 possible faults that turn the light on, to know what has developed a problem you must have the system tested, this is called an OBD2 fault code test, Kragen and Autozone parts stores do this testing for free.

Yes and no depends on the code thats stored. The codes can be read withh code reader and most auto parts stores will offer to check your car for codes and tell you what parts are usally needed to fix the problem the code points out. You can leave the gas cap loose and the light will come on. so a lose gas cap isn't a bad problem until you get into a rooloverwreak. The fumes that get released plutute the air and may bother your nose some. Other problems may make the exhaust system parts fail or the motor blow if their not looked into.soon.

This is always a serious problem - it signals the fact that a fult has been detected and you must take care of it. Take the car to someone that can read the error codes - almost all parts shops cn do it for a very small fee.
Once you will know what triggered the warning you must fix it.

No. it's simply reminding you that the engine must soon be serviced. Ignoring it means that your car will eventually have an expensive breakdown due to a lack of maintenance and in the short term may fail emissions tests.

The fix is simple: just service the engine as the light suggests and then get the service indicator light reset. You can buy a special tool to do it, or can pay a repair shop to reset the service light for you

SOURCE: I replaced my headlight on my 2005 nissan maxima

It has nothing to do with the head light. It just happen to come on at that time. You probably have an Oxygen censor clogging up with carbon. That would make the light come on. I would have a diagnostic done to be sure. I would need to know the codes from the diagnostic to be sure what it is.

The service engine soon light of nissan maxima 1998

The warning light is on because the computer found a problem that will affect engine performance and emissions.
You would need to get the computer scanned for trouble codes to proceed. Most auto parts stores will scan for free.

I replaced my headlight on my 2005 nissan maxima and now my service engine soon light is on. Why would that be??

It is on because the computer has detected a problem with your vehicle. Take it to Autozone or Advanced and they will scan it for free. They will let you know what the code is and possibly what parts you might need.

I have a 97 nissan maxima, it was serviced in february but the service light stays on. why is the service light staying on?

this light may be the check engine light. it's misleading. I've seen two service engine soon lights in cars. one for check engine, one for service. have it checked with a scanner
