In the underhood fuse relay panel their are both fuses ( two prong ) and relays that can have 4 prongs ( most common ) on GM cars if they look the same they are the same ther are 5 and 6 prong relays too. On the underside of the lid the picture there shows what they do. Fuel pump, high beams, raditorfans, rear window defrost. these relays do almost everything electrical.

How can I open the hood of a '97 Jeep Cherokee when the rod that pops open the latch is disconnected under the hood?

some times pulling the cable sheath from the side as person 2 pulls lever gets it open (not snapped cable, but stretched)
well , that can be hard. (snapped)
its just a cable. so the tech looks at that.
he sees if the center wire in said cable is broken. is it?
i remove it from lever and pull just it (center) open now?
no, we find it pulls out, and is say 2 foot long. 1/2 normal.
he may see , yes, it is then asks self where exactly
he finds it broken say in the middle. so gains access to that point
and cuts the cable there there , and skins back the sheath,
then pulls the good side center wire, and opens the latch.
now he replaces the cable.
and calibrates it per those words in the FSM.

it has 3 fail modes.
  1. lever broken
  2. cable broken or streatched
  3. or latch broken or needs calibration (adjusted to spec).

the only magic here is the yanking cable at mid span.
while BOB pulls lever. (bob is common mechanics name,a joke?)
LOL

Hello, I'm trying to open the hood of my 1991 nissan maxima. I have pulled on the lever to open, however the lever will not move. I do not want to pull it too hard without damaging it. Please help!!!

It is 20, and 10 years past its designed life, this stuff happens. You need to figure out whether the latch cable has broken or the latch itself is bad. If the cable is bad, you should be able to reach up under the dash, find the cable coming from the back of the lever and pull it out from the inside. If it comes freely, then you know it is broken but do NOT pull it all the way out. If however the cable is good but the latch is broken you are going to have to get at the latch via under the bumper or through the grille, and unbolt it or the male prong on the hood. Some extensions and swivels will come in handy for your socket set. When you get the latch or prong loose the hood will open

There is also a remote possibility that the spring which pops the hood up when you pull the lever has broken and the hood is actually unlatched so long as the lever is pulled. Check this by having someone pull and hold the lever from inside while you try to open the hood and release the secondary.

How do i access the engine code that pertains to a 1987 g-20 van, I can't find a two prong connector under the passenger dash but a multi prong female plug is next to the hood release driver's side

The connector is under the dash panel in front of the driver, it is called the ALDL connector, it is not a two prong connector, it has 12 cavities, you jump the upper two on the right of the connector shell, see picture below.

With key off use a paper clip and touch together the top right 2 connectors on the diagnostic link connector. Then turn key on, it should flash once pause then flash twice, that is a 12, it will flash that 3 times that is normal, then it will flash any codes set 3 times each then return to 12 when done.
The OBD Diagnostic Link Connector is located: Front seating area, driver side, driver side of steering column, mounted behind dash upper panel to the left side of the steering column

I cant remember hoe to open my hood on a 1991 oldsmobile

Hello. There is a hood release under the dash on the far left between the steering column and the driver's door. Just pull it which will release the hood about an inch. Then go to the front of the hood and reach under the middle area to pull the lever to release the hood the rest of the way. Joe

Replacing fuel pump relay switch, need to find location on vehicle

There is a black box under the hood on the drivers side of the vehicle in front of the brake booster. The top pops off and the fuse relay is a square 4 or 5 prong block fuse under there.

2001 Jetta tdi hood release broken how do i get it open

on the left side of the drivers side their is a panel with the hood release Pull off the cover of the hood release and you will see a cable connected to the hood release. take some pliers and give it a good pull.
if you dont hear a click, have someone pull the hood up while you pull on the hood release cable. next their will be little space to take off the grille for easier acces. take off the grille carefully by prying it off carefully on each side. push the grill up and pull it towards you going up then down.
Now all you have to do is stick a flathead screwdriver or philips. and on the bottom of the hood release on the hood stick the screwdriver under the release and push the screw driver down while pushing the hood up.
