Question about 2003 Chrysler 300M

1 Answer

It looks like the cable on the gear shifter of my wife's Chrysler 2002 300m just popped. It had been rough to shift from Park to Drive and vice versa for about a year. Now the gear shifter is not connected to anything. I can spin it, lift it, etc. My question is: what do I need to fix it. Will I have to replace the entire assembly or just a portion of the cable? Thanks in advance!

Any idea on how much the new cable set will cost? Is this normally a dealership item or can I go through Autozone, NAPA< etc to get it? Thanks again!

Great job. The mechanic was able to take what daylongdrive suggested and start on the car this evening. He says it'll be ready by noon tomorrow! Just in time for our out of town trip! Thank you so much!!!!!

Yes now the cables broken and it needs to be replaced. the problem is you also need to replace the ground wire to the engine to the battery to the body ( firewall) as the power running though the cable has melted and welded the cable till it broke. The cable can be found on the steering colum under the covers and even if you have console shift this cable is in the collum as it makes the shift lock work as you turn on the key. thesr bolts come loose and then the cable gets locked and then ou pull hard enough to break it. the cables are sold as a set and change them both even though one may be OK but the cables have been made better and the new cable is an upgraded part.

the cable comes though the floorboards and turns around and goes back under the drivers side of the floorboard on top of the transmaission. on the top of the trans mission ( under the floorboard ) therres a lever that the cable hooks to. the end breaks off the cable the clip that hold the cale to the bracket comes out and the bracket comes loose from thetransmission housing. The other end is inside the collum or in the floor console if its floor shift ( it's made both ways) the floor shift model have the possibly that a drink orrainwater has gotton to thecable and caused it to fail. the covers are removed by looking for the screws that hold consold on and theirs in the carpet thats in the bottom of the storeage tray. pulling on th consoles as it moves you'll ba ale to determine where the other screws are and remove them too. them theres a clip that holds tha cable to a floor bracket and the end of the cable just snaps on the shifter ( it snaps off too and breaks sometimes) The new cable is redesigned and it is less likly to be a power cable like the old one was.

I checked the two online stores I order fromeveryday and they don't list a cable for your car so the dealer and the junkyards are the only places to get this part. I'd be careful at the junkyard as it may have the same problem as yours, or the dismanaler may ruin it getting it out. The clips won't come with the new cable from the dealer so if their appears to be a problem with the top or bottom clip get them too. The dealer can most of the time get most parts that they don't have in stock the next working day. They'll help youas thier good peaple just let them be and act like you assume that they are and they will be.

1988 Dodge Ram 50 Automatic shifts into park reverse and neutral. But physically won't go into drive gears.

Disconnect shift cable from transmission linkage and try to manually put transmission in drive gear ( make sure wheels chocked/park brake on ). If transmission goes into drive gear, suspect a shift cable or shifter assembly problem. If you can't manually shift into drive gear by hand with cable disconnected, suspect internal transmission/shift linkage issue

05 automatic V6 mustang has a stiff shifter and is hard to put from park to other gears and vice versa. What is its problem and how do I fix it?

The shifting cables can go bad and freeze up. If your mechanically inclined you can set emergency parking brake then disconnect cable on the side of your transmission and see how hard it is to shift. If stiff remove center console and disconnect cable from shifter. Then it should move freely because the frozen cable isn't connected. Replace bad cable or what ever part may have been binding.

How to I repair my shift gears on my Chrysler 2007 Sebring? It's stuck in park.

I assume this is a floor shift, remove shifter knob, pry the trim around the shifter up to remove to get to the 2 screws there, in the storage compartment there may be 4 screws, pull Ebrake up as far as you can then rear of console upward over ebrake handle then back, remember you have to reverse what you just did to put it back together. If your after the shift cable try to pop it off the trans first to see if it can be moved out of park at the trans if so more likely is the cable if not you may have internal trans problem.

I can not get my car to shift from park into drive, the handle will not move at all what can I do?

Actually the Shifter Interlock Lever needs replacing (MOPAR part #68088259AB). It's a little plastic piece that costs about $8.00 at the dealership. If you pop off the cover of the gear shifter, you can actually push in the plastic piece and shift out of park. Doesn't look like it'll be to hard to fix; part comes with a 11-step instruction sheet with pictures. I also have a 2005 300 with the same issue...

Have a 2003 Dodge Intrepid. I can't get the shifter on the column to move out of park even when I move the steering wheel up,down & side to side. Is it the cable, the link, what?

The shifter needs to be inspected. The shifter assembly is got misaligned, it has to be open and realign.

There are many other possibilities. But if it was working right up till now and suddenly this occurred then its shifter assembly alignment issue.

Also i suggest you to refer these gear shift issues, which are mostly noticed. These are direct links with appropriate solutions to the specific problems of gear ****.

I have a 2005 Chrysler 300, As I shifted the car from park to reverse I heard and felt a pop in the gear shift. The gear shift moves but the car is stuck in low.

Go to the Prindle switch where the cable meets the transmission and check if it has not unhooked. Move the shifter all the way to the Park position and adjust/tighten.

Chrysler sebring is locked in park

Had this happen to me yesterday. Remove the liner in the cup holder. There is a hole that you can stick your finger in to push the gear release lever forward. If that does not work, pull up the chrome bezel around the gear shift. there is a pink piece of plastic attached to a spring, push that down and towards the rear of the car and you should be able to shift freely until you put it in park again. Make sure the car is running and your foot is on the brake while trying either solution.

Car Won't Fully Shift into Park

You either have problem with the shifter assy, or the shifter cable has come out of adjustment.
If you remove the shifter bezel and center console you will be able to see the shifter cable. There will be a white or black lift tab on the cable. Release the tab and and place shifter in park. If it still does not go into park that means that you will need a shifter assy. If it goes into park with the tab released you push the tab back down with it still in park.

That should take care of your problem.
