Hi,
If it has a petrol engine, pese check the ignition coil itself the connections to this and the distributor cap and the rotor arm,i wold personally sart with replacing the distributor cap.
But it is worth checking the ignition leads as well.

When it stops running and will not start back up, you'll need to figure out if you are lacking spark or fuel pressure to proceed with testing.

Since you are getting spark and fuel we know you are good there. Check the timing on the engine. Turn the engine from the front of the crankshaft with a socket and a large breaker bar until you reach top dead center of the intake stroke. Then remove the distributor cap and check to make sure the rotor is pointing to the # 1 cylinder. It almost sounds from your description of the sound the engine is making that the timing chain has jumped a few teeth on the gear. These factory gears have a nylon coating on the teeth and over time the nylon chips off the gear. When to much of this plastic gets chipped off the teeth it results in chain slack on the push side of the gear. When you shut the engine off it can jump a few teeth at the very last second before the engine stops rotating the crank and cause it to jump teeth. The engine probably has high mileage and might need the timing gears and chain replaced now. If you perform the visual check with the distributor I think you will find the chain has jumped a few teeth. If you need more help come back to this site and one of us will be glad to help. Good luck. Let me know what you discover.

F150 5.4 hesitates

if it is not running on all cylinders you need to check the coil packs and if your battery is not good this will not produce the electrcal output to really check you car out

97 M3 chokes on clold start.

The E36 M3 is natorious for having some minor enigine hesitation immediately after a cold start. My car does this for about the first block both in the morning and after work. Its part of the engine management start routine: you will see this more specifically if you just start you car when its cold and let it idle. Initially you'll notice that the idle tone is a bit more rumbly and rough; but after about minute or so you'll notice that pitch changes and smoothes out. I was alarmed about this too, but after some research, I found it was a characteristic of the design. Just take it easy for the first block and you will never notice. Don't ever cold rev your engine. - Hope that helps.
