Question about 2003 GMC Yukon Denali

1 Answer

When driving I hear a rouring noise. Sounds like it is coming from the trans or front diff. Also the trans slips but only over 3000 rpms.

Your vehicle needs a transmission service and band adjustment at minimum. I'm sorry to say that you may be looking a complete rebuild depending on how long its been driven like this

The noise has been going on for about a month but the slipping just started. Do you recommend the service or just replacing the trans?

A reputable shop will give you the answer, most will credit the service toward a rebuild, you need to see what is in the pan when it is removed to tell the extent of the damage

Driving along makes a very loud noise like motor is racing, but continue driving, noise goes away then starts again???

Please take a look at your Engine's RPMs when this is happening and let us know, as it will help with the diagnosis. If the Engine RPM is stable (not high during the periods of the racing engine sound), then it sounds like your Radiator Fan clutch may be going out. The noise you are hearing is the fan kicking in and blowing a lot of air, which in turn sounds like the engine is racing.

If the RPMs are increasing with the racing engine sound, it could be the transmission/(clutch if manual trans) slipping.
Hope this helps!

wd diff lock only locks the front to rear diffs not the 2 wheels on the same diff. To have both front wheels driving as you require will need limited slip diff in front or locker in front Be hard to steer in tight areas but they are available.

My 1997 Jimmy runs fine in idle when I take off the vechile is fine until it reaches 20 mph it won't accelerate and the rpms increase up to 3000 but no speed. What's wrong it's a 4 wheel d

Sounds like 2nd gear in the transmission is slipping. Cars usually shift at 15-20 mph from first to 2nd. First check the trans fluid.

Have the front CV joints inspected and lubricated if applicable. Most shops should inspect this for free. Hope this helps.

Yes, hook up the front end. Failure to do so will burn out the diff in the trans case...sounds like you already may have done so. The system is meant to have LITTLE difference between front end and rear end...not 100%, liky your described situation...

You will know it is dead, aside from disassembly and inspection, by any slip stick or binding and release more harshley than before.

Transmission is slipping but it runs strong when im going fast.

Have a pressure test done on the trans, sounds like front pump is weak and at low rpms trans slips because it isn't producing the pressure it needs but at higher rpms the pump is turning fast ebough to provide adequate pressure.

Check the fluid level. Sounds as though it is slipping. Check for tran leaks
