Question about 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt

2006 cobalt 2.2 liter-----timing chain broken while driving---is this considered an "interference engine"? or can we just replace the chain, guides.etc...?

I have never seen a chain motor that was not interference.

Just anted to confirm that my 2005 buick rendezvous has a non interference engine as i need to replace the timing belt/chain and was concerned with driving it


you need to say what engine it has ( 4,v6,v8)
a qualified mechanic always treats an engine as intereference fit regardless because either engine can have valve damage when the failure occurs
If you have not broken a belt or chain and you set the timing marks up properly before removing the belt or chain and do not turn crank or cam/s after the belt/chain is removed there will be no damage done
that only occurs when the crank is or cam/s are turned without the connection to each other

Timing belt. This engine is an interference engine. Ensure the belt is replaced before it breaks to prevent internal engine damage. If replacing it as a DIY project, be sure to follow all procedures carefully as improper procedure can also result in valve or piston damage. If the belt has already broken, the odds are better than 90% that the cylinder head will need to be repaired or replaced and the pistons will need to be inspected for damage.

My timing chain has snapped


I assume it's your timing belt, not a chain, which rarely, if ever snap. Depending on the make of the car and the engine you may, or may not, have serious engine damage.. DO NOT ATTEMPT to start the car, have it towed to your shop of choice. If there is no engine damage a timing belt replacement generally will run you 2 or 3 hundred bucks...if you did serious engine damage you may have to decide if the car if worth the money to have it repaired. What you need to know is whether your car has an "interference" or "non-interference" type engine.. In an interference type engine if the timing belt breaks the valves will "interfere" with the pistons as they travel up if the timing belt breaks, which results in generally catastrophic engine failure.. non-interference engines generally suffer little or no engine damage with a broken timing belt.. I broke a timing belt on my 1990 Toyota Supra going 70mph, but it was a non-interference engine and after having the belt replaced it was fine.. here is a good list someone put together on what type of engine is in your car.. you should find the engine type either marked on the engine or on a label under the hood, or the owners manual.. good luck. http://yourcarangel.com/2014/07/interference-engines-complete-list/

Is it an interference or noninterference engine? Think timing chain has broke


Broken timing chain is a very large problem, if it happened while engine is running. Bent/broken valves and such. Makes a LOT of noise, and engine stops immediately.

Your question doesn't include make/model/year, so your question isn't possible to answer. Doesn't really matter, though, if your timing chain broke. That's pretty rare. Timing belt, yes. Chain, no.

There is no indication in the parts book that it is an interference engine. Most of the time engines with timing chains are not.

Help! I was changing the water pump on a 2006 Cobalt and I dropped a socket into where the timing chain is...anyone else ever do this? Its not down in the oil pan, and I'm not really sure where it...


If it dropped into the timing chain cover, a long flexible magnet should help you retrieve the socket that was dropped. It will take some hunting but it can be done. Worst case is that you are going to have to remove the timing chain cover and get the piece out, if you do that make sure that you get the timing chain gasket to replace the gasket from the old one.

Have a 2006 cobalt 2.2 liter DOHC eco tech w bad head gasket and warped head. just got the head machined and replaced the head gasket along with many other parts. but im trying to install the timing chain...


when you got the chain on and the cam's timed and unloaded and locked the tensioner and installed the tensioner then the shoe guides did you unlock the tensioner before you turned it over
when you turn the engine over it will have a little bit of slack because it's only spring tension
double check the engine is timed correct don't worry about the colored links they only line up every 35 revolutions
if the crank and the cams are in time
you should be good

Have you ever had your timing chain replaced? If not, then most likely your timing chain is getting loose and starting to tap on the sides of the housing. This is normal after probably 110-130000 miles, so you may consider this. DOHC engines don't have the lifter tapping problems that pushrod engines have. The reason you only year the timing chain tap at idle and when warm, is the metal expands when it warms up, making the chain slightly longer. At idle, chains and belts "flutter," or shake back and forth. when the engine speeds up, it puts more tension on the chain and it stops.
