U better stop before u do something wrong the brakes is not something to play with and u may damage the mass cilinder my advice bring the car into a garage

To Remove:
  1. Drain brake fluid to ½ full level in reservoir.

  6. Install the brake caliper with the 2 mounting bolts. Torque the bolts 25 ft-lb (34 Nm).
  7. Install the front wheels.
  8. Fill the master cylinder with new clean brake fluid.
  9. Pump the brake pedal several times to seat the brake pads.

  6. Install the rear brake caliper with the slide pins. Torque the slide pins as follows:
    • TMC made (Japan): Torque the caliper slide pin 25 ft-lb (34.3 Nm)
    • TMMK made (Kentucky): Torque the caliper slide pin 34 ft-lb (47 Nm)
  7. Fill the master cylinder with new clean brake fluid.
  8. Pump the brake pedal several times to seat the brake pads.
  9. Install the rear wheels.

Rear To Remove:
  1. Remove the rear wheels.
  2. Remove the brake caliper assembly.
  3. Remove the brake pads.
  4. Remove the 2 bolts and the caliper mounting bracket.
  5. Place match marks on the disc and axle hub.
  6. Remove the rear disc.
To Install:
  1. Align the match marks and install the rear disc.
  2. Install the rear brake caliper mounting bracket. Torque the bracket bolts as follows:
    • TMC made (Japan): Torque the bracket bolt 46 ft-lb (61.8 Nm)
    • TMMK made (Kentucky): Torque the bracket bolt 34 ft-lb (47 Nm)
  3. Install the rear brake caliper with the slide pins. Torque the slide pins as follows:
    • TMC made (Japan): Torque the caliper slide pin 25 ft-lb (34.3 Nm)
    • TMMK made (Kentucky): Torque the caliper slide pin 32 ft-lb (43 Nm)
  4. Install new gaskets and connect the brake hose to the caliper with the banjo fitting bolt. Torque the fitting bolt 22 ft-lb (29.4 Nm).
  5. Fill the reservoir with brake fluid.

What tools are needed to change the brakes


if the front are rotors there are two bolts that need to be taken off first.
remove the caliper, then remove the two caliper bracket bolts and remove the rotor
replace the rotor and reinstall the caliper bracket.
pull the caliper sliders and lube them with brake grease.
reinstall caliper sliders and install new pads and caliper
refasten caliper to bracket and your done

if your doing rear disc brakes same as front
if brakes are drum type you will need rear drum brake tools to release the springs and to refasten
the new brake shoes

Remove the old Brake Pads
  • 1 Park your car on a level surface. If you have a stick shift car make sure the car is in gear. Do not set the parking brake. Place blocks in front of the front tires so the car does not move while you are working on it.
  • 2 Open the hood of your car and locate the master cylinder. If necessary, remove brake fluid until the level in the container is less than half full. A turkey baster is a good tool for this. Put the brake fluid in the plastic container and dispose of it the way you dispose of motor oil.
  • 3 Raise the rear end of your car with your car jack. Remove the rear tire or wheel assembly.
  • 4 Remove the parking brake cable from the back of the caliper. Use the pliers to remove the cable clip (restraining clip).
  • 5 Use the socket wrench to remove the upper mounting bolt from the caliper. If the upper guide pin moves while you do this, use a back-up wrench to hold the upper guide pin.
  • 6 Rotate the caliper downward, pivoting it on the lower caliper bolt. Remove the inner and outer brake pads from the caliper.
  • Install the new Brake Pads
  • 1 Turn the caliper piston clockwise to retract it into the caliper housing. Insert the new brake pads into the caliper.
  • 2 Swing the caliper upward and into place. Apply a thin coat of thread locking compound to the bolt and use the socket wrench to tighten the bolt to 271 inch lb. (35 Nm).
  • 3 Reattach the parking brake cable to the caliper.
  • 4 Replace the tire wheel assembly. Lower the car to the ground.
  • 5 Pump the brake pedal a few times to seat the brake pads. Do this before trying to move your car.
  • 6 Add fluid to the master cylinder container to replace any you removed before you removed the old brake pads.
  • 7 Season the brake pads by making only gentle stops when you are driving for the first week after you install the new brake pads. Try not to do any hard stopping when you are seasoning the brakes.

    Will I need a caliper reset tool kit to change the brakes on my 2007 toyota sienna or will a standard c-clamp do the job? And since it is an ABS system, I assume that brakes must be bled, correct?


    Brake Pads Removal & Installation Front To Remove:
    1. Remove the front wheels. Front brake caliper (exploded view) toyota-09-00-5838.gif

    2. Loosen the caliper bleeder.
    3. Hold the slide pin; remove the 2 mounting bolts and remove the brake caliper from the support.
    4. Support the caliper.
    5. Open the brake bleeder. Press the caliper piston into the bore.
    6. Close the bleeder after the piston has reached the bottom of the caliper bore.
    7. Remove the brake pads, support plates, wear indicators and anti squeal shims.
    8. Remove the slide pins and bushings from the caliper support.
    To Install:
    1. Lubricate the slide pins and bushings with brake grease.
    2. Install the bushing on the slide pin.
    3. Install the slide pin on the caliper support.
    4. Install the brake pad support plates on the caliper supports.
    5. Lubricate the anti squeal shims with brake grease.
    6. Install the anti squeal shims on the brake pads.
    7. Install the pad wear indicator facing upward and install the pads on the caliper support.
    8. Install the caliper on the support.
    9. Install the 2 mounting bolts, hold the slide pins and tighten 25 ft-lb (34 Nm).
    10. Fill the reservoir and bleed the brakes.
    11. Install the front wheels.
    Rear To Remove:
    1. Remove the rear wheels.

    Replace rear brake pads


    Rear disc brake pads offer better performance and are not as affected by moisture like conventional brake shoe style brakes are. Rear disc brakes are similar to front disc brakes. The main difference is that rear disc brake systems must incorporate the emergency brake system. There are two methods widely used for the emergency brake with rear disc systems. The first system is a brake shoe inside the brake disc that is actuated by the emergency brake lever. The second is a screw style actuator inside the brake caliper. When activated the brake pads are forced into the brake disc and held tightly by the emergency brake lever.
    READ COMPLETELY BEFORE STARTING
    Step 1 - Identify Rear Disc Brake Components

    Step 2 - Removing the Rear Brake Caliper Mount Bolts
    rear_brake_pads_2.jpg To replace rear brake pads and rotors the rear brake caliper needs to be removed. First loosen the rear brake caliper mount bolts and remove them. Turn counter clockwise.
    Step 3 - Lift Rear Brake Caliper from The Caliper Mount
    rear_brake_pads_3.jpg After the caliper mount bolts have been removed, gently lift the brake caliper from the caliper mount. Inspect the caliper slides; they should move freely in the caliper mount. Remove rear brake pads and hardware.

    Step 4 - Removing Caliper Mount Bolts
    rear_brake_pads_4.jpg With a socket wrench or other appropriate removal tool, loosen the rear brake caliper mounting bolts. Remove bolts and lift the caliper mount and remove it from the vehicle. Remove the retaining screw from the disc mounting hole. Tap the rotor gently to release any rust that has accumulated between the rotor and bearing hub. Lift brake rotor from wheel hub holding on tightly, using both hands. You do not want to drop the rotor.

    Step 5 - Removing Rear Brake Rotor
    rear_brake_rotor.jpg Remove the retaining screw from the disc mounting hole, tap the rotor gently to release any rust that has accumulated between the rotor and bearing hub. Lift brake rotor from wheel hub, hold on using both hands and do not drop.

    Step 6 - Install New Brake Rotor
    rear_brake_rotor_2.jpg Check the new rotor against the old brake rotor to make sure they are the same size. Clean the mating surface on the wheel hub before the new brake rotor is installed. Reinstall rotor retainer screw.
    Step 7 - Reset Rear Brake Caliper
    rear_brakes_7.jpg Before new brake pads can be installed, the rear brake caliper must be reset. The reset tool winds the piston back into position so the new brake pads will fit. This style of brake caliper will not compress with a clamp tool; it can only be reset with the proper reset tool.
    Step 8 - Reinstall Rear Caliper Mount and Install New Rear Brake Pads
    rear_brake_rotor_3.jpg After the caliper has been reset, reinstall caliper mounting bolts and make sure the bolts are tight. Then match up the old brake pads to the new brake pads. They should be exactly the same except, of course; the old ones will be worn out. Check the new brake pads for proper fit and install any brake hardware that is required.
    Step 9 - Remount Rear Brake Caliper
    rear_brake_rotor_4.jpg Reinstall the brake caliper, align brake pad hardware and reinstall caliper mounting bolts. (Note: align the rear peg of the brake pad to the groove in the caliper piston.) Recheck and retighten all caliper and caliper mount bolts. Bleed brake system to relieve any air in the system. Before driving the vehicle, push the brake pedal down and let it up slowly. This operation forces the brake pads to travel to the brake rotors. DO NOT DRIVE VEHICLE until proper brake pedal operation resumes. When test driving vehicle listen for any unusual noises during the operation of the brakes.
    WARNING! Always have the vehicle under inspection on level ground, in park with the emergency brake on. Always wear protective eyewear, gloves and necessary clothing before inspection or work begins. Never crank an engine over when anyone is near the battery or engine. Always have an operational fire extinguisher close by, obey all first aid instructions in the event of an injury. Never stand in front or behind a vehicle when cranked over or running. When engine is cranked over keep hands and clothing away from rotating components. Never move a car without proper brake pedal operation.

    How do i change both front and rear brake pads on a 2004 mazda rx8?


    CHANGING FRONT BRAKE PADS
    Jack up the car. Take off your tire. Find the bolt on the back of the caliper and take it off. This should release the caliper, pull the caliper off the disc. Now you should be able to take the pad out. Replace the pad. You'll need a special tool to reset the caliper. As the brakes wear down, the caliper gets tighter so the brakes still work. I'm not sure exactly what its called, but you can borrow one from auto zone. Follow the instructions that come with it to reset the caliper. Slide the caliper back over the disc. If it doesn't go on, you need to reset the caliper more. Put the relese bolt back in. Put your tire back on.Drive slowly and test the brakes.
    CHANGING THE REAR BRAKE PADS
    The rear brakes on the rx8 are a bit different than most setups...be careful! The only way to move the piston back into the caliper is by way of a special allen head bolt that is directly behind the piston, on the back side of the caliper, installed under a 14mm bolt.
    You have to remove this bolt to gain access to the allen head. As you loosen the allen head bolt(counter-clockwise), the piston will move back into the caliper.
    Installation is pretty typical, again, the allen head bolt being the unusual part. The manual says to tighten this bolt until the pads contact the rotor, then loosen the bolt 1/3rd of a turn, then reinstall the 14mm bolt.

    2. Concerning wheel and tire assembly.
    3. Remove the bolt and gaskets, then disconnect the flexible hose from the caliper and after disconnecting the flexible hose (1), cap or tape the openings to prevent entry of foreign material.
    4. Since the brake fluid flows out from the connecting coupler, place a drain pan under the vehicle.
    5. Remove guide bolt upper
    6. Remove lock bolt lower
    7. Remove caliper assembly.
    8. Remove support bracket with pad assembly and take care not to damage the flexible brake hose when removing the support bracket.
    9. Remove pad assembly with shim and mark the lining locations if they are to be reinstalled.
    10. Remove clip.

    Per Chilton Auto repair manual:

    Removal & Installation
    1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
    2. Remove the rear wheel.
    3. Siphon a small amount of brake fluid from the master cylinder reservoir.
    4. Insert a small prybar through the caliper opening and pry the caliper cover (using the outboard brake pad) to bottom the piston in the caliper bore.
    5. Remove the caliper slide bolts.
    6. Remove the caliper from the anchor.

      WARNING Support the brake caliper with mechanics wire. Do not let the caliper hang by the brake hose.
    7. Remove the brake pads from the caliper.
    To install:
    1. Install the brake pads onto the caliper.
    2. Lubricate the slide pin bolts with grease provided with the brake pads, or suitable silicon grease equivalent.
    3. Install the caliper on the anchor and tighten the slide pin bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
    4. Install the rear wheel.
    5. Lower the vehicle.
    6. Pump the brake pedal several times until a firm pedal is obtained in order to properly seat the pads.
    7. Refill the brake fluid reservoir to the proper level.

    How do I change the rear disc brakes? How do you get the piston to go in?


    First you should think about getting a repair manual. These will have detailed instructions complete with pictures and safety warnings. If you can't spend the $20 on a manual then here is what you need to do.

    Just so you know I have done this on my 1994 Accord so there may be specific operations that differ on a 1998. I can give you some good general instructions. Also read through all the instructions before beginning.

    Open the hood and take the cover off of the master cylinder reservoir. This will release the hydraulic pressure in the brake system. Remove the covers from both rear wheels and loosen the lug nuts, but do not remove them. Block both front wheels and release the parking brake. Jack the vehicle up one side at time and put the vehicle on jack stands. Remove both rear wheels. When replacing the pads you must do both sides of the car. Complete one side of the car before going to the other. This way you have a reference if you forget how something goes together.

    With the wheel off you can now remove the brake caliper. You can remove the caliper shield if you like (it covers the rear portion of the caliper including the area where the parking brake is attached). Remove the caliper by removing the bolts holding it to the mounting bracket. My personal experience has been that these can be very tight. Make sure you are twisting them the correct direction and be careful to not round out the bolt. With the caliper removed you can now remove the brake pads and other hardware.

    Remove both the inner and outer pads. If you are going to replace the pad retainers remove them as well. Prepare your new pads for installation. Install new pad retainers first if you removed them. Before putting the new pads on you should apply an anti squeal lubricant. Most auto parts stores will include this with your purchase of brake pads. On my Honda the inside and outside pads are different. The inside pad has a wear indicator on it. This looks like a flat doubled over piece of metal sticking out from the bottom of the pad. When the pad is installed the wear indicator is at the bottom.

    Now you have to retract the piston in the caliper. On my Honda the piston is round with a groove in the shape of an X in the middle. Retract the piston by turning it clockwise. If you don't get the piston retracted the caliper won't fit over the new pads. Now replace the caliper. Make sure that the piston is oriented with the tab on the inner pad. The piston should slide over this tab until the tab rests in the center of the X. Secure the caliper by replace the bolts you removed. I found this difficult to do when replacing all the hardware. The new hardware will want to push the caliper out of place and lining up the holes for the bolts has to be exact. It is easiest to do this when the car is on a lift and you can work on the brakes at shoulder height. Now replace the caliper shield then do the other side.

    You are now ready to test your work. Put the wheels back on and lower the car. Tighten the lug nuts again after you remove the jack. Put the cover back on the master cylinder reservoir. Pump the brakes several times to restore pressure. Put the parking brake on and start the car. Pump the brakes again and visually inspect the rear brakes for any leaking fluid (just for the off chance that you made a major goof). Also check the level of fluid in the master cylinder reservoir.

    You should check your brakes in an isolated area before doing regular driving. I also like to check my job on the lug nuts after my first trip. You would be surprised how many shops and people forget to tighten them properly.

    You may also want to check your parking brake. When you have the vehicle up on jack stands with the wheels on you should be able to rotate the wheels without any rubbing on the pads (of course the parking brake has to be off too). If there is any rubbing then your parking brake may be too tight, or you may have a problem with a caliper. Parking brake adjustment can be done easily as can replacement of a caliper. Make sure that your parking brake is not rubbing when released, and that is applying enough pressure when engaged.

    according to the service manual there are two bolts hold the caliber to tthe adapter plate and the caliper should roll up and out. the only problem i could imagine is if the pads are hanging in the adapter
