My 87 T-Type no longer goes into overdrive. Any suggestions?

This can be caused by a failed Vehicle speed sensor or a mechanical fault in the transmission or the OD solenoid, run a test on the system and see if u have any fault codes. here is how to do a OBD1 GM fault code test, go to the link

Overdrive problems

it might have been a former rental car that means it could have govenor on it.but by it being an 87 it might just need to have tune up

I want to swap engine and trans. from wrecked 92 E150 van to 87 E

You can swap just the transmission unless the shifter is on the column,then you will need the column as well,You don't need the engine if your is still good.

87 cherokee blows out black smoke

check air filter change the charcoal canister .scan it to check the map sensor and the vacuum line that goes to it .make sure fuel pressure regulator is working.

No Overdrive

There is a relay for the overdrive behind the ashtray, behind the fuses. One of those relays is not functioning right and my manual is not woth me to tell you which one Sorry. C

No 2nd, 3rd or overdrive. reverse and 1st ok

your transmission is need to take it to a shop and ave it repaired or replaced

all vtechs will run well on regular gas..87.....a suggestion though from a veteran mechanic who's seen many many vehicles with fuel related problems over the yrs..stay away from arco (methane fuels) they damage internals due to high particulate damaging moisture content...and fill up once every 10 tankfuls with premium 91 octane high quality fuel(Unocal 76) to clean and blow out residual carbon etc from combustion chamber

Toyota ed is right when he speaks of low coolant temp as a cause. there is also a temperature sensor on the engine that is specific for the auto trans model. may be a white plastic single pin connector by the t-stat housing, not to be confused with the blade type connector that is used for the temp. guage. were you sure to connect the connector that powers to o/d solenoid on the side of the trans. when you installed the engine?
