Question about 2004 Kia Amanti

1 Answer

The alternator and battery are regulary going out. Four alternators and 2 batteries in less than 24 months. One mechanic said it had a unusual high amp draw on it while running but the Kia dealer could not find anything wrong with the electrical system.

That's a lot of alternators and batteries. Are the alternators you replace it with lifetime warranted? Also, what's the cca of the battery and the warranty of the batteries replaced in it?

Yes but after the fourth i was told the next time they were gonna refund the purchase price and not replace it anymore. The battery was replaced with one similiar to orginal, I am not sure of exact CCA. I am more concerned why it is chewing up alternators so often.

Yes, this is a unique problem that usually can be rectified by getting a top quality alternator, i.e. lifetime warranted.

But, if they won't warranty it anymore, then that's a definite problem for this vehicle.

What was the amperage draw that was excessive according to that one mechanic?

Battery keeps going dead

24 volts is way to high, the battery should be 12 volts, the alternator should put out 13 volts up to 15.5 volts, if the alternator belt is excessively loose, it wont charge properly, if the belt is tight check the alternator output, (you can ck it at the battery) make sure the output is a minium of 13 should be not less when reving the engine up a little the voltage should increase, but not above 15.5 volts

Brake and battery light on new battery and alternator installed

Wouldn't be a fuse, but it seems as if the alternator is still not putting out normal power, or else your battery has a problem taking a charge. Better have the battery tested for a dead cell. also see what a voltmeter says about alternator output now. If you have an electrical problem in the wiring somewhere or in the alt. charging controls, then possibly one or more of the diodes in the alternator may got burnt out. That means the alternator puts out less power.
On some newer cars, the engine computer, pcm, controls the rate of charge of the alternator. So you have to be careful diagnosing -know how your system operates. That's why mechanics always ask for year, make, model, and engine size if applicable.

Car keeps going through altenators, on third one. have also replaced battery once. why?2003 santa fe

Relpacing a battery on an 8 y.o. vehicle is not unusual. If the alternator is not a factory rebuilt or new unit and just a repaired unit this may be your problem. A 12 month warrenty is the norm on alternators and anything less is a rebuild or repair. Changing where you are sourcing the Alternator(s) may be your problem. The alternator is protected by a fuse link type connector at the battery and would isolate a cathastropic fault within the alternator unit itself. Good Luck

check for a big heavy fuse nearf the battery,i dont know if it has one?? iam a general mechanic not a mazada specialist, try this trick ? start engine and hold rpm at 1500,then disconnect battery and see if engine stops if it carries on running then altenator is working. If it carries on running then turn on all electrical thingys except the radio. If its still running ok then fault is elsewhere like a discharge overnight.

Battery problem

You either have a circuit somethere in a system or the alternator does not do a good job (Failure of the diode bridge or voltage regulator in the alternator). Also if your vehicle has an average run time (to go to work) of less than 20 minutes, your alternator will not have the opportunity to recharge the battery fully. You can check it for free in Autozone (battery votage and alternator charge).
Also check the battery connectros and alternator connectors for deposition
Good Luck
