Could be a hairline crack in cap, invisible to eye. Also check wiring harness leading to distributor for possible damage

Replacing the fuse the first time was the right move, becuase it could have been a fluke that it blew. Replacing it again and again was not! You should have found out EVERYTHING that the #2 fuse controlled and verified that the components weren't pulling excessive amperage (shorted condition). By replacing the fuse over and over, you might have made the problem worse by subjecting good components to something that was shorted.

BTW next time pick the oldest guy at autozone to help you, if the counter help knew their stuff they would have told you the same thing I just did!

Did you replaced your whole distributor or just the cap and the rotor? Have you check the pressure on you fuel line it could be your fuel pump.

distributor where defintly a big problem in those years that is how they act when the distributor is getting hot and shutting down the car

My mother has a 1987 Ford F150, 351 automatic with 50,000 actual miles. She was having a problem with it dieing on her at stop lights and she was afraid to drive it. We've had it tuned up, new plugs...


At 50,000 miles, the timing chain should not be a problem. It's possible that there is carbon build up in the engine from sitting around and not being driven but at that mileage it shouldn't interfere with the engine running. A good 1 or 2 hour drive should keep that down if it's done a couple times per month.During that run get it up to highway speeds.
The problem with dieing is in the carburator. Go through the Yellow Pages and find a shop that specializes in carbs or fuel systems. The carb isn't adjusted properly. It shouldn't reek of gas and there shouldn't be raw gas in the engine. If you can't find a shop in the phone book check around with some car nuts or clubs if there are any in your area. You may know someone that knows an older mechanic who can help you set up the carb. It's a tricky job.
Once it is running properly, make sure your mom takes it out for a drive a couple times a month and keeps adding gas when she does so it doesn't go stale or uses a fuel stabilizer. You can get that at an auto parts store. Gas has a short shelf life, 60-90 days. After that it doesn't work very good. Hope this helps.

It sounds as thou you have moisture in your distributor.Pull the distributor cap off and let the car sit and dry out for a couple of days and see if that fixes the problem.
