Question about 1995 Jeep Cherokee

Collant overheating Hi My Cherokee has had this problem for a while and I am lost for an answer. The coolant system runs fine for a while then overheats and the coolant flow out through the reserviour cap, I changed the cap thinking the cap had lost its pressure, but yesterday I took the jeep out for a run, all was fine temp gauge was rising and falling, no problem I thought the fan is doing its job now, the level guage came up once again and the coolant was at boiling level again. has anybody any idea what is wrong all the heads are fine, no loss of power and no contamination.

    Collant fan does not work on an 01 jeep grande cherokee limited edition. i am wondering if the fuse could be the problem

Did you manage to fix the problem?
I have been thinking it had to be fan related, the previous owner had supposedly changed all the cooling system.

I had the same problem with the same model checked for leaks flushed radiator changed water pump radiator cap it turned out that one of the front fans were not working its a tricky one as many mechanics had no answer for this problem

While it doesn't seem likely, if you've changed, or had the thermostat changed.... I'd say you got a faulty thermostat. I am curious as to what your temperature gauge says the temperature of the engine and coolant is.. If your gauge is showing hot, I can think of two more possibilities... the water pump isn't pumping right... and, if the water pump isn't working right, the problem can be a cracked head or block, which can cause an airlock in the coolant system. Check the coolant or radiator cap.

Hi, personally I would lean toward air in the coolant system, closed systems are bad for that. Also the temp sensor, fan switch, wiring between fan switch and fan......etc. I found a page with people discussing solutions they found to similar problems;

I own a 2002 jeep grand Cherokee Laredo. Bought it 2 months ago knowing it had a heater core that would need to be fixed eventually. Driving down the expressway 2 weeks ago it stopped running, had it towed...


Hi there cristina bam! If the core was bad it may have been leaking. Many newer cars on the road these days have a sensor specifically made to monitor the coolant level. If the collant has leaked out there is a very probale chance that the sensor is preventing your Jeep from starting to prevent damage. Add enough fluid to the coolant system to fill the motor block and radiator. If it starts it was the fluid level, if not, there is a greater underlying issue at hand. 2001 jeep Cherokee running hot


If you have the 4.0L six cylinder those run hot. 210-220 degrees. If the cooling system is fine, both fans are working and it's not overheating you can try adding a bottle of "Water Wetter" to the coolant. I also changed my radiator cap to an 18psi which seemed to help run slightly cooler. You find it at the autoparts store.

Car smells like it is running hot but gauge doesn't show its running hot. I don't see anything leaking from underneath and have checked fluids. Had to have the thermostate replaced a couple of years ago...


This could be due to a leaky heater core. The heater core corrodes and starts with a tiny collant leak that smells collant inside the car and washes out with the A/C water when the A/C is running. This water/coolant mix drips out possibly over the right side exhaust pipe creating the "hot coolant" smell outside. At the begining you won't notice the coolant been lost, but later the loss will be ovious.

Check for collapsing radiator hose on suction side of waterpump when motor revs raised above idle.
Check collant resevoir pressure cap is serviceable,
Check coolant system is properly filled - carry out any bleed off procedure specified to clear any air locks.
Check condition of radiator core:-
1) for blockage of air flow to (bugs/grass etc),
2) and internal blockage to coolant flow,

Replace the thermostat, if all above ok.

Overheating, not pulling from overflow??


Hi, i'm going to ask if you've checked the fan clutch? with the engine running, do you feel a strong wind flow coming from the fan when you stand near it? If the fan clutch is not engaging, and it will still spin and look as though it is working, but it has no force. This will cause the engine to overheat. another thing to check is whether the electric fan comes on when you put the air con on.

1. If you don't feel a strong blow of air coming from the engine bay when it is running and the hood open, then very carefully and slowly try and see if the fan clutch is working by using a broom handle to hold it still when the engine is running. If it is working well, it will kick the broom handle out of the way. If not, the fan will just stop spinning with the broom handle holding it.

2. turn air con off and run engine. check fan clutch. If fan clutch ok, then turn air con on and see if the electric fan is running as well. If electric fan is not running as soon as you put the air con on, then the supply to the fan is faulty. This could be a fuse, a bad connection, or even switch relay.

The engine fan cannot cool the engine sufficiently on its own with the air con on.

an easy way to get air out of the engine coolant system is to take the cap off, and turn the engine on. with the engine cool enough, you can carefully squeeze the top coolant hose to push out the air and this should make the cooland level drop. top up the coolant through the radiator cap - not the reserve/expansion tank. with the rad topped up to the brim, put the cap back on.

do these tests first. They're easy and will let you identify if the system is working. If these are working, and it's still overheating, then it could be the rad cap becoming faulty, or even if its a replacement cap, it's rated wrong for the lbs, and doesn't let the radiator breath and let the expanded hot coolant flow into the expansion tank. This will make the engine overheat and build up enough pressure so that the coolant gets kicked out of the engine via a hose, splitting the radiator, or eventually the head gasket. This type of fault usually occurs when you sit still at lights, or parked up with the engine running, and you then notice collant squirting out. Also, especially after you've ran the engine and stopped the engine running. The build up of pressure has no where to go so the hot coolant from the engine pushes the coolant out of the nearest hole it can find.

Still, something is making it run hot, it could be the clutch fan or coolant pump.
