Question about 2003 Chevrolet Malibu

Car will not start. it cranks but won't turnover. have lights so thinking it's not the battery. could it be the starter?

Hi:
If your cranks, the starter is working. If the engine doesn't start, then you are either not getting spark or fuel.

If you can borrow a fuel pressure guage, that would tell you if your fuel pump circuit is working. You can check for spark by inserting a spare spark plug into one of your connected spark plug wires, and ground it to a metal part of your engine.

Sounds more like a spark issue especially if your getting CRANK.
Give the battery a good three hour charge. Clean up cables on battery and to starter . If this doesn't work then test for spark at the plugs. ( go to Autozone and get one) if you get spark great if not start from plugs and work your way back to coil to determine where spark ends. At this point I suggest you buy the repair manual. To test for fuel is a little tricky so I'm gonna suggest that you get the manual and do exactly what it says to do for fuel testing. If your uncomfortable with it send the vehicle to a repair shop.Basically spark, fuel and air one of these items the vehicle is not getting.

When the bushes in a starter get worn, it can cause the armature to rub on the magnetic poles (poleing) This can cause the starter turn slow or not at all
The sintered metal bushes are like bearings. Not to be confused with carbon brushes which are the electrical connectors.
When a starter clicks, it is the solenoid you can hear.supplying power through the brushes.

A starter that is poleing,often stops in a place where it isnt rubbing, and works fine the next start.
There can be other problems with a starter , perhaps one of the brushes is sticking, or the solenoid.
When it happens a tap with a hammer on the starter or solenoid, while a friend turns the key, is enough to get it working( this isnt a fix but might get you started in an emergency)

There is also the possibility of a loose or dirty cable connection, from when the new battery was installed

Do this to check if it's a bad battery, turn head light's on and try to start it, if head light go to dim or off, bad battery not holding a charge, if light stay on ok, then this will take two people tap on the starter kinda hard with a hammer or something you can reach it with while some one hold's to key to start, if it start's bad starter or trys to turn engine replace it.

Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome. If you have a vehicle that will turn over and over but will not start, I will tell you some things that you need to check. Every vehicle needs air, fuel, and fire to start. Now, the first thing you want to check is the fuel system. You want to make sure that the engine is getting fuel. The easiest way to test the fuel system is by testing the fuel pressure on the fuel rail. You need to refer to your owner manual for the correct measurement of pressure. Another easy test is using starter fluid. If it starts when you spray the fluid, you have a fuel issue. If it doesn't, check the ignition system. If your pressure is not correct or you have no way of testing the fuel pressure, start by checking your fuel pump. The fuel pump pumps fuel out of the gas tank and to your fuel filter. When you first turn your key on, you should be able to hear the fuel pump kick on for a second or two. It makes a soft buzzing sound. Listen for this sound. This will determine if the pump is kicking on and working. If you don't hear this sound, check your fuel pump fuse, relay, and your reset button. Not all vehicles have a reset button, so once again check to see if you have this button. If you change all of these and the pump still doesn't work, you may have a bad fuel pump. Test and make sure the pump is getting power before you change it. Now, you want to make sure the fuel filter is not stopped up. Check the gas lines and make sure they have no damage. Lastly, make sure fuel is getting to the fuel injectors. If you are getting fuel, you will need to make sure you are getting fire. You need to test your spark plugs or coils for spark. If you have spark, you should look over your timing belt or timing chain to make sure it is not broken or slipping. If you are not getting spark, you will need to check the spark plugs, coils, coil packs, wires, distributor, distributor cap, and rotor. Anyone of these can cause a vehicle to not spark. Check everything you can. Make sure the rotor is spinning and make sure the distributor cap has all metal contacts. Also, make sure the cap is not damaged or cracked. Make sure none of the plug/coil wires are damaged. Make sure they are all hooked up correctly. Now, it is possible that you could have a bad camshaft sensor or crankshaft sensor. In some vehicles, the camshaft sensor is built into the distributor. You want to test each of these parts and make sure each one is getting power. If a part is not getting power, that may be the reason your vehicle is not starting. If you have a check engine light on, you need to get your computer scanned for error codes. More then likely, if your vehicle won't start, your check engine light is on. The light is on because your computer has detected a problem with the vehicle. You can buy a cheap code reader for around forty dollars from Autozone or Advanced. Just make sure you know all your codes for your vehicle. When you have it scanned, the computer may know the exact parts you need to change. Most of these parts listed run off your ECM. The ignition system is a very complex system. It is rarely, but they do go bad. If you believe that the computer is to blame, make sure you have it flashed before you put it in your vehicle. If you don't, it will not work. Finding your error codes is the best way to finding your solution. If not, you will have many things to check. Always make sure you run a test on a part before changing it. Make sure that part is getting power. If it is not, check the power source. I know this is a lot of information, but any of the parts listed can cause the vehicle to not start. If you have no access to a code reader, fuel pressure tester, or a code reader, you can still check a lot of things. It is just harder. Remember, always use the process of elimination. Determine if the part is working or not and move on to the next part. You will eventually find your problem. Lastly, electrical problems can cause the symptoms you are having. They are very hard to find. When trying to find an electrical problem, you need to make sure you know what to test for. Each wire has a purpose. One part of the engine can shut down another part. You need to know how many volts you are testing for on each wire. You can use a voltage meter to test for current.

Hi Teresa thats ththhe sign of a battery going bad, how old is the battery? You might want to have it load tested so you can trouble shoot further, there could be more than 1 issue.

Why won t my car turnover


  • Okay, a clicking sound is the solenoid engaging the starter drive gear but the starting motor is not turning over. First possible is low battery. Second is bad or dirty connection, usually battery terminal. Good enough to energize solenoid but not enough amps to spin starter. Third is a bad starter motor, usually a brush corroded, worn or stuck.
  • Lift the hood and look at the battery terminals. if they are clean and tight, check the battery for charge. I usually hook a booster on and try cranking the engine over. ZIf it works, charge or replace the battery.
  • If it didn't crank, Take a jumper cable and connect the one end to the battery positive. Touch the other end to the starter motor terminal. Motor should turn over, if not, replace the starter.

sounds like the bendex in the starter is not kicking in take it to a local auto electrician and get him to check it out

Starter engages and turns over once then starter disengages. Battery voltage is 12.85

Richard, how have you proven the battery is good? This is critical. replaced a starter a long time ago and found out it was the battery the whole time..

The ignition start circuit is the path from the ignition key in cranking mode to the solenoid on the starter. The path travels through a starter relay and a neutral safety switch before it reaches the starter.
This must be the circuit not working on your car.Make sure battery and starter connections are tight.Check for power at the starter solenoid terminal with a testlight when someone turns key to crank. If you have power there, they sold you a defective starter. If you have no power there then it could be the relay or the neutral safety switch.

My 4runner wont start. it clicks once but wont crank or turnover. battery is new and starter was replaced less than a year ago.


You will need a meter or a test light to check the starter. You will have a big wire cable going from the battery to the starter that always has 12 volts positve at it. The smaller wire will have 12 positive when the ignition key is turned to "start." If you have both of these at the starter, your starter is bad.
