Question about 1994 GMC Suburban

2 Answers

I have 99 suburban that is making a whirring/howling sound in the area of the tranny. What troubles me is it is intermittent. It will do it standing still and on the road but not all of the time. Acceleration parked will cause it to increase in sound and change pitch. The only thing I have noticed is it only does this after the truck warms up. Tranny fluid is full and has decent color. Have not had the tranny go out as many have reported around 100,000. Did lose the converter around 60,000 though. Has 163,000 on it now. One other thing, I did find the front diff. fluid low as well.(not that it would have anything to do with it)

that was my fear. From what I am told, If I don't address it now and goes out that will most likely take the tranny with it and add another $3000 to the bill on a $4000 truck.

Hi Jesse, You need to get the correct management system and probably the wiring harness to go with it. It will also require someone conversant with electronics and who knows the circuit of the vehicles concerned. Regards John

if its coming from the gas tank area the only thing i can think of would be the fuel pump..they make a little humming sound, but if its making a howling sound it might be going bad. does this help?

Hello. Sorry to hear you are having this trouble. From what I hear it sounds like your automatic transaxle may be low on fluid, or the fluid has been getting too old and overheated (as any will over time). Please look for signs of any tranny fluid leaks on the ground and under the van. If it does you will need to fix the leak, and/or keep up with fluid loss all the time until you do.

Please check your automatic transaxle (tranny) fluid level with the dipstick under the hood. See if the fluid looks pink and clean. If the fluid or dipstick is dark or brown looking at all, it needs replaced. Get the fluid professionally flushed and changed. This step alone may fix your van as long as the fluid is not leaking, and too much old fluid use (hopefully) has not already damaged the tranny.

Z3 whirring sound when transmission is engaged

It is possible that your differential could be making the sound. However, if the sound disappears when putting the trans in neutral, I would suspect that the differential should still be making noise. If the torque converter is worn, then you would have noise while in gear, but probably not as noticeable while in neutral. Depending on the production date of your car, 2000-early2001 Z3 had an issue with the torque converters.
