Question about 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee
There is no part that you could go to a parts store and buy that is called a throttle. The closest thing to that would be the throttle body that takes the place of a carburetor on fuel injected engines.
A carburetors job was to mix the fuel and air and permit the proper amount into the engine. The throttle body is pretty much just an air valve that opens and closes as you push down on the gas pedal.
It has a sensor attached to it that tells the computer what position the gas pedal is, and a computer operated valve that regulates air flow when you don't have your foot on the gas.
(both devices are replaceable) The body itself rarely fails as there isn't much there to wear out. (at worst it may need to be cleaned)
You also have a throttle cable. That is a cable just like the one that operates the hand brakes on a bike. It moves the valve on the throttle body as you push down on the gas pedal. The cable is replaceable as well. Cables can fray or break.
Now...What's wrong with it??? No one can tell you that or even guess because we can't see it and you haven't given any info about the actual problem....Even so, a solution would be an educated guess.
Bottom line is that if a shop actually told you that you need a new throttle, either they are clueless or you have mis-understood what they told you.
