Question about Chevrolet S 10

1 Answer

Stop at gas station after driving 250 miles in my 2000 s10 extreme and pump shuts off like tank is full after 3 gallons of gas go in...should take 11 or so gallons. Also gas gauge stays on full and will drop off to empty and pop back up to full no matter how much gas is in the tank. Gauge usually stays pegged at full for the most part. The gas gauge has been this way for many months without the gas fill up problem which is my main concern just thought it might help with the solution.

Sounds like you have a restriction in the fuel inlet pipe,( maybe air locking) also your tank sender unit neads replacing to fix you gauge fault, or it maybe that it has something that is not alowingf it to move freely inside the tank, have a good look inside when low on fuel. through the hole where the sender is fitted.

What is the typical mileage per tank? Does anyone know? How can I improve the miles

car is 24mpg, city.
so 15.6 MPG sucks it does. but is possible if you let my 15yo kid drive car, it is easy, to do, fast right and heavy foot, for sure.

is that averaging 3 tanks, as that prevents ISLAND pump shut off
issues. (varies)
did you check miles with GPS, to see if your speedo/odommeter is a bit nuts?

here are the basics, i can list 100 things, but here are a few.
  1. measured wrong. not 3 times avg. (use same gas station and pump) use GPS for true miles. (then switch stations and repeat)
  2. bad driving, (teenager? in house?)
  3. stolen fuel?
  4. brakes dragging.?
  5. running 15psi in tires,? (oh'bummer said it ,!)
  6. engine running bad, driving with the CEL lamp glowing? DTCs stored, scan the PCM> look see.? fix.
  7. never ever tuned it UP, this decade?
  8. Pulling a heavy load.?
  9. measured only on the up hill run in the rocky mountains, (i just did that)
  10. transmissions slips or TCC lockup failing. (scan the PCM)
  11. not coasting down hills( cuts fuel 100%) see #2
  12. old fuel?
  13. ill stop.

I have a 2000 ford windstar, how many miles can you drive when the fuel light goes on?

you should not drive with fuel light on you will burn your pump out but the light comes on with 3 gallons of gas left so 40 miles in town 60 miles on the highway but I would not do it.

I bought a used 2003 A4 Convertible Audi 3.0 Feels it burns more gas than expected. Is there anything I can check or do to reduce that. Thanks Sean

to see what you get for mileage, take it to a gas station and fill it till the pump stops and reset your trip meter. Drive it around like you normally would to work or whatever till the tank is almost empty and go fill it up again till the pump stops. Its best to go to the same pump you used before. Once it is full look to see how many gallons or liters you put in(This is how many you used since the last time you filled up). Take the number of miles/kilometers from your trip meter(the number of miles/kilometers you drove since you last filled up) and divide it by the gallons/liters you used and you will get your miles/kilometers per gallon/liter. Compare this with the rating your vehicle is suppose to get. But remember it can very depending on how you drive.
Miles/kilometers divided by gallons/liters

I have a 1999 Dodge Caravan. When the gas gauge is just above the E it will stall out. It doesn't matter if I am on the freeway or driving around town. We put fuel injecter fluid in and it didn't help.The...

Your gauge is reading high ... I think you are out of gas. You should calculate your actual Miles Per Gallon - find out what the capacity of your tank is and fill accordingly. For esample, you actually get 15 miles per gallon, your tank is 20 gallons - you should be able to drive about 300 miles between fillups. At 250 miles, start looking for a station.

2000 Ford Expedition Starting problem

If the fuel gauge drops off when you are driving then its a sending unit problem that means you have to drop the tank and replace the float and sending unit. This is a common problem for alot of cars because of cheap gas. If you have to drop the tank check the fuel pump canster for dirt because of cheap gas. Replace the fuel pump strainer and fuel pump filter. If the car or truck has about 100,000 miles you might want to change the fuel pump at that time also just to cover your back. If you take it to a shop they will charge you at least $900 to start. But if you do it yourself it will cost you about $200 dollars maybe alittle more.

The most likely problem is the sender unit in the tank is stuck.
Sender units are relatively cheap and easy to change.
Autozone probably carry them on the shelf.
