Replace the ignition coils if you are having misfires. These engines are known for faulty coils. Replace all 8 spark plugs and coils. Does not require removing top part of the engine.

How do i change the spark plugs. And how many do i need for a 2005 mercury mountaineer mariner

4 plugs for a 4 cylinder, 6 plugs for a 6 cylinder and 8 for an 8 cylinder --none for a diesel
pull the coil / lead of each plug ( one at a time ) unscrew the plug using the appropriate tool and replace
when you have to ask these questions it will be cheaper and quicker to get them changed professionally ( plugs cost from $8.00 each for the cheapest to $25.00 each for top quality lines )
AS efi plugs seldom need changing but you have a problem like a misfire, run the fault codes first and have the injectors checked

You may need to replace the coil pack or just the insulation boot. The Boots are $8.50 each at IPD.

2003 mountaineer V8 Temp gauge jumps to hot not over heating. Replaced thermostat, no change

The Engine Temp. sensor is bad. it is under the intake manifold. if there is a miss also check under the coils over the spark plugs. If there is Coolant in the spark plug holes .then the intake gasket is leaking. The intake manifold needs to come off to change the coolant sensor. When off look for corrosion on the cylinder head at the coolant port. If there is corrsion then the cylinder head must be replaced.

Cylinder four misfire. Check your plug wires (or coil packs) and your spark splugs.

03 mercury mountaineer, service engine soon light came on. i was told it needed a oil change . we did that , now how do i get the light to go off ?

Your Service Engine Soon light has nothing to do with reminding you to change your oil. The light is controlled by the ECM (Computer) in your vehicle. It monitors various sensors in your engine and compares them to variables or programs that is in its memory. When something is not registering correctly or is outside of its parameters it will turn on a MIL(Malfunction Indicator Light)or in your case a Service Engine Soon light. You will need a OBD II ( On Board Diagnostic) reader or scanner to hook up to your diagnostic port under your driver's side footwell to read what code the ECM is putting out. Than with the code the mechanic can look up the code to see what part is sending a malfunctioning. The scanner can also read and erase the code too. You can have your code pulled up with a OBD II scanner for free from any AutoZone store.

My 2003 ford expedition reads a code 0303= 3 cylinder misfire, which side of my vehicle would that be on and could replacing ignition coil and spark plug fix it and stop the lose of power and hesitation?

Third cylinder back on the passenger side. I'd recommend changing all 8 coils and spark plugs. These coils don't last long, and once one goes, more will fail soon after. This job also requires removing the fuel rail to gain access to the coil and plugs. I personally have the same SUV and went through the same issue!!
