Question about 1989 Pontiac Firebird

1 Answer

While I am idling at say a stop light for any period of time the car every so often seems to have a rough surge somewhere under the hood. Could that be the fan kicking on causing that or is there something I need to look at specifically pertaining to my engine?

IF THIS IS A V6 ENGINE IT COULD BE ANYTHING, BUT YOU MUST CHECK ALL EMISSIONS EQUIPMENT, VACUUM LINES, CLEAN IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE AND AND ESPECIALLY TEST AND CLEAN THE EGR VALVE AND TEST MAP SENSOR,AND OTHERS-FUEL PUMP AND FUEL PRESSURE, INJECTORS, ETC..(all fuel related stuff)
NO, NOT AN EASY SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM.
IF IT'S A V8 CHECK OUT THIS WEB PAGE.

When you accelerate the engine it rocks a bit under the hood. A loose/internally broken ground wire/cable under the hood is a possibility. Look for any and all wires/cables under the hood that might be loose. Wiggle all of these wires and don't forget any ground wires coming off the negative battery post. There are, I believe, ground wires at different areas under the hood. You might find your problem with one of these ground wires. The other possibility is at idle not a ton of charge is being generated from the charging system. Above idle an over charging voltage regulator can be the problem. It may be integrated into the PCM or be part of the alternator. A voltage charge test will reveal this. So, there are two possible sources of malfunction. Best of luck. And don't give up, you'll figure it out.

Idles roughly, then low when stopped or in park, then dies. Decreasing gas mileage. Slow to accelerate

Sometimes that's caused by a vacuum leak near the manifold area.

Sometimes air in the coolant will cause an idle problem. Air will keep the air temp sensor from sending proper info.
Hope this helps.

Check your fuel vapor recovery system, your van has unusual set up, and the effect is RAW fuel gets purged, rather than vapor.
The dead giveaway test is does the issue happen on light acceleration? Does it stop if you let off the throttle? Can you accelerate harder and "get past" the issue?

It had a heart attack!!. Sounds like a fuel line leak under the hood. Usually if something fails that will cause higher emissions the check engine light is supposed to turn ON. Seems like that feature has also failed.

Take it to a good mechanic before it catches fire.
