Question about Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

Sometimes my jeep will pop and backfire like it is either not getting fuel or not firing properly. I floor it for a few seconds and it usaually starts to run good. I have replaced the fuel pump and thought that was it but after a while it started again.I ran several bottles of injector cleaner through it. Wires and plugs are not that old. Most of the time it runs good, just every now and then it will act up.

1996 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE,4.0L,6CYCL.,2WD,ELETRICAL PROBLEMS THAT MAKES MY TRUCK BACKFIRE SO HARD IT BLOWS MY MUFFLER OPEN LIKE A ALUMINUM CAN,SOMETIMES YOU CAN FEEL ELECTRICITY SHOOT TO THE PASSENGER

There are a couple of things that might cause a backfire and NONE of them have any relation to electricity:
1. Engine timing, the relationship of the CAM and the CRANK shaft. IF a valve is open when the engine cylinder fires then the resulting action is a backfire.
2.Cylinder misfire: There is one cylinder exhausting unfired fuel to the exhaust manifold and if he manifold is hot enough, the fuel mixture ignites.

Its a 1995 eclipse gs. Cranks but doesnt start. The fuel pump kicks in and fuel rail has gas flowing. Its just backfires and sounds bad in general. Ive had several people look at it and no one can so

There are few possibilities that cause such problems.
No start problem,backfire issues.
I suggest you few help links related to these issues.

Car not starting or turning over indicates towards multiple possibilities. It can be issue with battery or weak battery. But if battery checks out ok, then it can be starter issue or faulty alternator or problem with low fuel pressure or no spark at spark plugs due to dirty spark plugs or faulty ignition coil or injectors getting cracked or dirty and needs to be cleaned.

To confirm the problem, the basic troubleshooting is required.

My 1991 jeep wrangler will not start. Engine turns over fine. The engine is getting fuel and has fire to the spark plugs. I have already changed the distributor (cap and pop up coil), plugs, plug wires,...

Check the timing to ensure it is correct.
Check each cylinder for the proper compression.
Try starting the jeep with some starting fluid. If it starts with the starting fluid, you may have a few bad injectors, or faulty injector wiring harness.

I have a 180E 1991 model that is hard to start and when it does start it has a bit of a miss sometimes when starting it backfires/pops through air cleaner, others days just won't start

BACK FIRING AND HARD STARTING COULD BE CAUSED BY LOW FUEL PRESSURE CAUSED BY WORN FUEL PUMP.STOP UP FUEL FILTER AND STOPPED UP FUEL INJECTORS.IF ALL IS GOOD LOOK FOR VACUUM LEAKS AT INTAKE HOSES AND INTAKE MANIFOLD.WORN VALVES WILL CAUSE MISSING AND BACKFIRING.

96 jeep cherokee backfire through throttle body

I am going to take a stab at this....as I think you may have a head gasket that has blown out. The head gasket will cause a lil white smoke, and make idling extremely rough. Sometimes water will fill up in the top of the cylinder in the compression chamber when this leak, even minor occurs. That would explain some of the compression issues. Obviously with no compression it will not run properly or even fire if there is water vapor pentrating into chamber mixing with fuel giving you that white smoke/steam.

These are somewhat time consuming to change, but not difficult. The backfiring is caused by the computer trying to compensate for the firing issue. The computer when you change the head gasket is easy to fix. After repairng gasket, try to start the car a few times but not allowing it to run as it will just continue backfiring. Turn key off, let the vehicle set about 30 minutes or so, then go back and the vehicle should run properly again.

Let me know,

Chip

1996 jeep cherokee sport 4.0 L it will stall

it looks like your engine is having an over rich fuel mixture maybe, thatswhy when you press the pedal to the floor it starts becouse you allow lots of air to help clean the mixture while cranking, also you should have black smoke in the tailpipe until it cleans up and runs fine, i think youre having a leak in one our more injectors you should check them first for proper seal under pressure these is done in an injector test machine, second it may be a defective map sensor these trucks some times have a bad map and dont give a MIL (malfunction indacator lamp) and last but more rare to be is a blocked fuel pressure regulator chek fuel pressure it should be between 38 and 45 psi and it shoul hold these pressure when you turn off the engine if pressure drops fast its injector seal problems or fuel pump check

I have a 93 tempo 4 cyl. It starts on occasion. When its not starting, it turns over and fires/backfires/ pops but doesn't run. Sometimes pumping the gas pedal or flooring it gets it to run. It sputters at...

I would first begin with a good tune up with new plugs wires cap, rotor, check coil. injector can be clog also, try to add bottle of fuel injectors cleaner and add 93 octane of gas fill it half way and run it til empty and see that will also help. If you have high miles like over 100k have timing check, its good idea to change timing belt every 75-10k miles, if it jump time due to worn belt, the car will not run properly.

how long has this been happing..one tank of fuel or more, could have been bad gas, replace filter,, put gas dryier in fuel tank..if it continues could possibly be transmission related..the reving down doesn't sound like transmission though if tansmission was slipping it would rev up..good luck

RPM rev up and down at idle/ backfires/

Dont have the time right now to outline all the details, but I will bet that the timing chain is worn 4.0 engine?? Also I'd guess the problem started at about 160-170k miles.(how close am I???)
