all the boot does is keep dirt from getting to the lip seal if its leaking youl atleast need to replace seal and boot i think on that model youl need a specialty inner tie rod tool to remove before you can get the seal out. if it was me i believe id replace the whole rack if you plan on keeping the rig long hope this helps please rate me thanks

pretty decent job ahead first jack up car support with jack stands remove front wheels remove nuts on tie rod ends remove tie rod ends from spindles with tie rod end tool or tap with malet were they sit to loosen them hit the spindle area not the tie rod or tie rod threads then dissconnect power steering lines from steering rack also disconect steering linkage to rack there should be 2 main bolts holding assembly to frame remove them should free rack i know that car may have a unique design were u may have to remove inner tie rod ends first if it has those round bushings that always go bad disconect inner tie rod ends behind engine on top of steering rack then remove rack from wheel well replace those inner tie rod bushings u may be able to leave outer tie rod end connected to spindles and u may be able to get to the sterring rack from behind engine good luck

you don't need to remove the whole rack but do need a special tool called inner tie rod tool. can be bought or borrowed form most auto parts stores. first remove wheel. next loosen the jam nut on inner tie rod at the end of outer tie rod. remove cotter pin and nut on outer. use seperator or pickle fork to seperate outer from knuckle. then remove the clamps on boot and remove. then take tie rod tool and find the right size end and turn with 1/2" ratchet or breaker bar. it will turn hard at first cause of it being staked on to the threads. when it is off install new part with loc-tite on threads and tighten. when tight crimp inner flanges with either plier or hammer and punch to the rack. install in reverse order. remember to measure distance from clamp on outer side of boot to jam nut so you can get the alignment close until you get to shop for alignment.

How do I change the rack and pinion on a 2004 Cavalier?


its actually pretty straight foward, raise vehicle and support on stands disconnect hydraulics, disconnect tie rod ends, disconnect any electrical connections. remove mounting hardware and remove rack and pinion setup.installation is reverse on removal.note measure tires front and back of hub and adjust new tie rod ends to same measurement, also youll need to take it in for an alignment once your done, however measuring and adjusting to same measurement will get it close enough to drive to alignment shop

99 Olds alero will only turn to the right. On quick inspection found that the rack and pinion moves with turning the wheels. Is it supposed to?


The whole rack & pinion does NOT move! Only the rod out of either end of it. If the main body, where the hoses connect, is moving the mounting bolts are missing, or broken.

Normally any vehicle with rack & pinion steering, that will not turn left equals a bad rack & pinion.
The "wont turn left" is the classic industry wide indicator that the rack & pinion is worn out.

I need the tourqe setting for the connection from the tie rod end to the rack & pinion.


tie rod end torque settings. tie rod end and castllated nuts 35-46 ft lbs.

tie rod end jamb nut. 35-46 ft lbs.

rack and pinion. power rack and pinion subframe retaining bolts. 85-99 ft lbs.

YOU HAVE TO SAFELY RAISE SUPPORT VECHICLE ON JACK STANDS.MAKE SURE YOU HAVE VECHICLE PARKED ON LEVEL SOLID GROUND.ONCE VECHICLE RAISED.REMOVE FRONT WHEELS.REMOVE TIE RODS END COTTER PINS AND CASTLE NUTS.REMOVE TIE ROD ENDS FROM THE KNUCKLES.REMOVE FRONT STABILIZER BAR.POSITION THE DASH OPENING WEATHER SEAL FOR THE STEERING COLUMN OUT OF THE WAY.REMOVE OR DISCONNECT THE FOLLOWING.REMOVE PINCH BOLT RETAINING THE STEERING COLUMN INTERMEDIATE SHAFT COUPLING.REMOVE STEERING GEAR RETAINING NUTS BOLTS.REMOVE REAR SUBFRAME BOLTS.USE WIRE TO SUPPORT EXHAUST COMPONENTS UNLESS YOU ARE REMOVING THEM COMPLETELY.SUPPORT THE EXHAUST SYSTEM FLEX TUBE AND REMOVE THE FLEX TUBE TO DUAL CONVERTER Y PIPE ATTACHMENT.LOWER THE VECHICLE SLIGHTLY UNTIL THE REAR SUBFRAME SEPARATES FROM THE BODY APPROXIMATELY 4 INCHES.REMOVE THE HEAT SHIELD BAND AND FOLD THE HEAT SHIELD DOWN.ROTATE THE RACK AND PINION ASSEMBLY TO CLEAR THE BOLTS FROM THE FRONT SUBFRAME AND PULL TOWARD THE DRIVERS SIDE OF THE VECHICLE.PLACE A DRAIN PAN UNDER THE VECHICLE AND DISCONNECT THE POWER STEERING LINES.REMOVE THE RACK AND PINION ASSEMBLY THROUGH THE DRIVERS SIDE OF THE VECHICLE***** TO INSTALL ****** INSTALL NEW TEFLON O - RINGS ON THE POWER STEERING LINE FITTINGS. PLACE THE RACK AND PINION RETAINING BOLTS IN THE GEAR HOUSING.INSTALL RACK AND PINION ASSEMBLY THROUGH THE DRIVERS SIDE OF THE VECHICLE.INSTALL POWER STEERING LINES ON THE RACK AND PINION ASSEMBLY. My 1999 Chevy Cavalier has difficulty turning. While I'm driving and about to make a turn, my steering wheel appears to only turn about half way making it hard to complete the turn until I violently yank...


the most probable cause is the rack and pinion steering system. check for leaks in system, make sure if its full of power steering fluid.. if all checks ok, then its in the rack and pinion. that causes binding. I had a car that did the samething on turns. it was the rack doing this.

How do i change a rack and pinion bellow on a 98 chevy cavalier? I need to know if I need a tie rod end puller and I also need to know where the clips on the bellow are located I can find the first one but...


The bellows is just a dust cover. If fluid is leaking from the bellows, the rod seal is bad. It's usually cheaper to replace the rack than it is to rebuild it.

99 cavalier..all of a sudden the steering wheel is locking up and it seems to be getting worse. I can't even get it to turn anymore!


It sounds like your valve in the rack and pinion steering has gone bad or your steering pump has gone, but if the fluid is good in the power steering pump and there was no wining noise form the pump then it's a good chance the the rack and pinion needs to be replaced. Good luck and keep me posted.
