Hi, the power steering pump, on the driver side of the engine, is driven by the serpentine belt. The pulley for power steering, is fairly large, the pulley is pressed on the power steering shaft with a special tool. It is also removed from this shaft with a similar tool. The shaft that holds the pulley, has a tendancy to fracture, resulting in what looks like no problem, but in fact, the pulley is turning, and nothing is happening. The best way to see if the shaft is broken, is ( with the engine off ), try prying out on the pulley, with a large screwdriver, or a prybar. If the pulley comes out of the pump, and actually slides toward the radiator, the shaft is broken, and you will need a new pump. Good luck...Coop

Do you mean hard to steer your steering wheel?
If you have a noise when you are turning your steering wheel, you may have low power steering fluid. Add power steering fluid into your power steering fluid reservoir to the level required (check with your manual book). Make sure you get the right power steering fluid for Audi A4. Hope it will help

I have a BMW 330 ci 2001 the power steering fluid is low resulting in car being disabled. When I replace the fluid is therea reset process ?? Marjie H

There is no reset process, but the fluid may become aerated (foamy)when you start vehicle. The real issue is that the fluid leaked out, and that needs to be addressed.

Steering issues

Find the leak and repair it...It is a sealed system, if you are adding large amounts of power steering fluid, it is leaking out somewhere. Hoses, reservoir, steering box, power steering pump are places to check. You should only have to add minimal fluid to the system for the entire year.

The immediate squeal you hear is most probably the unit is out of fluid or has leaked onto the serpentine belt and causing it to slip.
Fix the leak and check your serpentine belt for wear.
