The 96 was a 2.4 but the engine had been removed. I took the tranny out along with the wiring harness, computer, etc. - everything. Vin # for 96 is 1G1JF12T2T7274692

The 97 was a 2.2 and I took engine, tranny, computer, wiring harness, key lock, from it and put into the 96

    Vin # for 97 is 1G1JC1242V7339321

The 97 was running before I took everything out. As I stated, now when I turn the key on, the starter does not engage.

Dan, still trying different things for now. Did you find out anything regarding wiring?? Can start car - manually with starter - but it pops and backfires.

I assume they are both 2.2 ? Did one have a black valve cover and the other silver? Did the 8th digit in the vin on both vehicles match? Did you change the engine control module with the engine? If you give me the vin on the car you are building and the one you used for parts ,I can see what it has for theft deterent. It's possible you just need to relearn the key switch if you changed the computer.Let me know , Dan

Dan, when you refer to the "speedo cluster" are you talking about the instrument cluster and or gauge package??

You will also need to swap the speedo cluster. thats where the anti theft module is located. After that you may still need to relearn the key switch.I will look at the wiring diagrams and get back to you on the starter circut in side the vehicle. You may have to change some other things.Talk to ya soon. Dan

I have a 2003 Chevy Cavalier, when I turn the key to accessory pos, all dash lights lit and fuel pump runs, but, when I turn the key, all gauges drop and nothing happens but a weird hissing sound?????

Where is the hissing coming from? Could it be coming from the engine compartment? Maybe the starter is spinning, and not engaging. Have someone turn the key and you watch and listen to the starter.

97 Chevy cavalier 2.2l 5 speed. Can't figure out

Best suggestion is go to your local GM parts department and as them for a print up.
If they are not sure about giving you one tell him you need some parts just have to be able to get it
apart and figure out which parts it is exactly you need.
A good partsman will even help you out.
Cheers

Starter replacement......needs to know how many cylinders my cars has

The starter has no cylinders. it is an electric motor powered from the battery and ignition system.
The chevy cavalier has a 4 cylinder engine though.

97 Cavailer won't crank HELP!!

my next step is to MANUALLY attempt to see if this engine will turn. Disconnect battery, remove starter completely which will expose the flywheel. With a HEAVY flat blade screwdriver partially inserted by a tooth in the flywheel, exert pressure in a pivot movement trying to move the flywheel . If it doesn't move the engine is seized.
