If a mechanic has brought the car to a halt (i.e., it will no longer start since he has mucked with it) and suspects the computer has been damaged can this really be so?

I would check the crank position sensor and the cam position sensor, heck I would just replace them both, if......the engine will crank over and run for 1 or 2 seconds then die. $50 for both from rockauto.com

putting water in a radiator will not work... water boils away quickly. You need to put antifreeze in it instead. If you are not sure how to do this ask a trusted friend or reliable mechanic

Sound like you may need a new power steering pump or rack and pinion. Have you noticed any leaks from the vehicle? If you've had the vehicle for 21yrs, then I would have to go with the power steering pump is begining to fail. Hope this helps.

I was told to have my oil changed every 3000 miles. Then I read on the internet you can wait almost 10000 miles before you get your oil changed. I am now 7000 miles over. This morning my car would not...

Well, longer oil change intervals all insist on enough oil. you cannot just keep going without checking it ROUTINELY.
I am not sure about the "thought I needed more oil" either it measured low or it did not....However, situations like you describe would not usually cause engine damage, and oil would not cause no start. I suspect that something else has happened, and I suggest that you get your vehicle towed to your mechanic, tell him all of the details and have it diagnosed.
Change your oil evey 2,500 to 3000 miles, it is cheap insurance.

I think you hit the nail on the head with this one. It sounds like no oil was in and you ran it it got hot and bang. I would take it back to the mechanic and make them repair it
