First thing a good jack if outside, depending onwhich one it is.support that side with a jack firmly and loosing the bolt and nut.but most tranmission mounts will have to be taken off from the bottom,so make sure you have good and safe jack stands. remove one mount at a time so that way you wont get to much engine movement.

SOURCE: '96 2.2 cavalier need manual shift out of first (replaced engine

the problem is 125 govener uses a check ball type govener the balls become stuck in the govener-also look at the pan see if it is pushed up into the trans where they used a jack to hold it,
then look at cable at the top of trans [where it hooks to the intake ]
it could be the cable is coming apart and sticking

Cavalier jumps when going into gears

have you checked your transmission fluid in your transmission it could be low. and also have you had your transmission serviced in the last year. try that and you might also have another motor mount out. check all of your motor mounts. hope that helps.

I have a 1996 chevy cavalier I need to know how to get how to get the transmission mount off the car?

The big one on the pulley side of the engine is the hard one.
Start by getting the area as clean as you can. Get the car on jack stands. Position a jack under the transmission with as wide a board or plate as possible to avoid bending the pan. When you get the transmission supported take off the bolts/nuts and remove the defective mount.
You will also be able to see if the motor/transmission mount has separated when the jack first starts to lift the transmission/engine. Most mounts are "failsafe" and not allow the engine to fall out - but time and fluid break down the rubber. The engine rotation breaks the mount's rubber from the metal.

I just change my transmision in my 96 cavalier 2.2l 3 spd and i can not get my linkage cable to line up its about a quarter of an inch off

You sure the mounts for the transmission are all in place if not this will cause the motor and transmission to shift not allowing the cable to connect properly. I have seen this mistake many times from various mechanics.

1st and 2nd gear won't catch in my manual 96

it is very likely this is being cuased by worn shift linkage and not the transmission itself, check the shift rods and bushings for being excessively loose, also any trans repair shop will do a test drive and give you a free diagnosis in hope of getting the work, things are tight right now. please rate this.
