1993 mercedes sl300 convertable

The car starts fine from cold, but when it gets up to running temperature it starts to miss fire cuts out on tick over then unable to start it again until it cools down,but if you drive the car not letting the car cut out, it will eventually clear and the car wiil be fine, but if not used for a few days the problem starts all over again ??.

    runs fine until its in a pull then cuts out put it in nutral mruns fine

Hi,
The early 300 SL suffered from dodgy HT leads and spark plugs if not regularly maintained, the problem with Mercedes Benz though is that the cars have so many features that it is almost impossible to diagnose without seeing the car. Some things to try (in this order) are : - Spark plugs, Ht leads, remove and clean Distributer Cap, replacement of HFM sensor (common fault), if none of these help then faults have been known in throttle valves and fuel pumps/filters

Hi, i have had the same problem with my 1993 SL, however i couldnt drive mine at all when it started to misfire. I replaced the distributor cap, rotor and ingnition coil which sorted the problem - the misfiring etc does seem like a fuel problem but it is actually an ignition issue. You could try starting with the sprk plugs 1st and work round that way, but water in distributor cap is common on this age of car.

Catalytic converters are plugged. Check temp inlet/outlet or back pressure.

The fuel pump relay is very common on that model and can cause those symptoms, I would start there first

sounds like your timing may be off, or have a crank shaft postion sensor failing, when it cuts are you losing spark completely? do you have a fuel pressue gauge? whats the pressure? also you could try running it with the map sensor unplugged and see if the condition improves

My 1993 mercedes sl300 runs bad when it gets hot . ie black smoke out of the exhaust and when you excelorate it cuts out and wont start for a good hour it seems like its flooding itself

Mercedes e230 1998. cold starting.


Mercedes has a cold start valve to spray extra fuel to assist the ignition when the temperature is cold. This is the problem with the cold start valve is not opened when it needed. There are 2 possible causes: 1- The valve is bad. 2- The coolant temperature sensor is bad.
The valve part is expensive and labor is not cheap. The first economic way to address is to replace the coolant temperature sensor. This sensor gives a different resistance reading as temperature changed. When it is bad, it give an erratic reading at cold temperature so the ECM could not recognize to give a signal to open the Cold start valve.

Hesitation , skipping,engine cuts out when accelerating


Bad coil they breakdown when the engine get hot. There is 3 coils total when it starts missing start pulling plu wires until you find the one that is not firing
