Question about 1987 Toyota Celica
The most common thing to look for is the ground to the tail light/brake light assembly. If the ground is bad then the brake light will ground through the filament in the tail light bulb, which can not happen when there is power in the bulb(headlights on).I would start by checking the ground wire in the harness to the light assembly in the rear,if need be run your own ground to the lamp assembly. If i am wrong let me know and i will dig deeper into your problem but i am confident that you will fin a bad ground wire.
