Question about 1997 Subaru Impreza

1 Answer

My 1997 Subaru Impreza starts, idles for 5-8 seconds, then starves out for fuel and stalls. Turn the key off and turn it back on and same thing happens. If you apply throttle during the first 5 seconds, it will run ragged but is starving for fuel the whole time. Fuel filter is new.

The fuel pump seems to be just shutting down after 6-8 seconds of idling. I suspect electrical but don't know what sensors coordinate with the computer to keep fuel pressure up. Any ideas?

Fuel pump may be weak, not giving enough pressure

have you changed the fuel filter?

  • mcguierk Sep 29, 2010

yep...tried that. But not the ones in the fuel pump itself. That's next, then a new fuel pump if necessary. Thanks for the help.

the fuel pump filters are the ones that get missed, also check the pick up pipe in the fuel tank, the can get clogged,

I have a 1996 Subaru Impreza started it went to back up it's stalled now it will not start again it turns over there is fuel in the fuel line when you turn the key if you remove the hose it is getting fuel...

Try spraying a little ether into the air intake. If it fires and tries to start it indicates a fuel system problem rather than a spark problem.

From your description the problem could be too much fuel. I have experienced similar things several times before. Killing the fuel pump and cranking with the throttle wide open in several 10 second bursts with 10 second rests between will help disperse excess fuel. It could even fire or run for a couple of seconds and if it does it will be time to replace the fuel pump fuse and try again but keep the throttle open a little.

If that doesn't work please come back again for further advice.

sounds like you need to replace your fuel pressure regulator.

check your grounds. I find many easy fixes by cleaning all the grounds around the engine bay. I would also check the ground at the fuel pump connector that wiring is prone to corrosion and breakage

2006 Subaru impreza when I start the car and press the gas the car doesn't move then it will die

hi could be a couple of things, first loss of fuel pressure would cause this so check fuel pump is working, check or replace fuel filter. Secondly if you have ruled out dirty fuel or a fuel prob it could also be the throttle position sensor which when worn make the computer not know what position the throttle is at causing it to stall, hope this helps as a starting point

1997 subaru HX20 impreza, when accerlating the car starts to stutter as if it is going to stall

If you have already done a good tune up and it still does it, I would check the fuel filter. IT allows the car to idle and run fine till you accelerate, then it cant maintain enough pressure for the injectors and will hesitate. Might want to check the OBD and see if it gives any readings in the computer. Good luck and have a great day.

Subaru impreza uk model wrx stalls and low idle, hesition

try adjusting the throttle cable, its a case of loosening a nut, pulling the cable through a bit more and then tightening it back up, you find it on the right hand side of the engine block close to the exhaust manifold.

1997 Sebring starts, then stalls

You need to disarm the alarm, the 2 problems are related, the start and stall is caused by the fuel pump interupt function of the factory alarm, you triggered it when you replaced the battery, The reset procedure is in the owners manual.
