If your question is - what is the normal operating engine temp, the answer is around 200-210 degrees depending on the air temp and the amount of power the engine is making.
The thermostat opens at 195 degrees.

Where is the thermostat located on a 1986 buick century? An illustration would help!

A 1986 century, you forgot to list then engine size so i will guess its a v6 engine, if its a four cylinder just follow the top radiator hose to the engine and the same goes for the v6 engine, the housing that the top hose clamps to at the engine is where the thermostat is locted,

test the ignition coil with a DVO meater to make sure the windings are ok......

86 firebird starts then shuts off automatically is it security??

This is how I did it and it worked perfectly. My car was finally purring again after weeks it was dead: - the typical resistor trick did not work.

you can get wiring diagrams at depending on what vehicle were dealing with. "wiring for 2.8 v6" is not enough info to help you with your problem.

Where is the coolant temp sensor for a 1996 pontiac firebird v6

Coolant temperature sensor is located on the intake manifold, close to the thermostat housing for the 3.4 liter and on the passenger side head for the V8's. Good luck and keep me posted.
