Question about 1988 Pontiac Firebird

1 Answer

5.0 fuel injected tpi 88 firebird replaced fuel pump map sensor and now the vehicle will start and idle great i can give it gas and will continue to run but excessive gas was leaking on manifold. i took apart plenum and runners and fuel rail and 3 fuel injectors appear to have been replaced by previous owner and o-rings appear to be new. Fuel pressure regualator also appears to have been replaced. I checked injectors while still hooked up and they appeared to be firing and i checked the socket and it did not appear to be full of gas. Questions are any other ways to check to see if my injectors and regulator are good prior to replacing or suggestions on what else may be causing me to leak so much gas.

Hi, Even though the Pressure Regulator has been replaced,It could have a raptured Diafram. Check to make sure your fuel return line is not Plugged, Other possibilities are Leaking Injectors or Damaged. Also check your Throttle body gaskets and Fuel Fittings.

Sir I hope this has helped you to solve your problem, PLEASE let me Know if my Solutions have helped you by Voting on the Solutions i've given you.

Thank You Sir.

I think I would be looking at the crank angle sensor and/or the cam sensors on this vehicle. It seems to me the engine isn't getting the signal to fire up.What happens when you squirt some fuel into the combustion chamber ? If it fires up I would be looking at cleaning the injectors. If it doesn't fire up What's the pressure on the fuel rail. does it have a buy pass pressure valve on the rail. Some suggestions good luck

have seen this before, these vehicles have a history with fuel pump relays failing, also idle air valves getting carboned up (dirty inside) and idle air is restricted and engine dies, and ck map sensor vacuum tubing for cracks.good luck

Fuel pump circuit (low voltage)
Try replacing the fuel pump relay or testing it if you have the manual.
