Do you mean that the gauge registers as empty, even after the tank is filled? Probably the sending unit needs to be replaced (it's in the tank, likely partially attached to the fuel pump).

SOURCE: My 1999 Oldsmobile Alero Gas gauge and fuel system

well # 1 the full gauge when empty is a sign that your fuel pump is bad and that needs to be replaced the part about spitting the gas back out is probrobly a clog between the fuel door and the tank itself or their might be a vapor lock door that might be stuck shut so fuel cant get in im not 100%sure about that but im 100%sure that the fuel guage is the fuel pump being dead.

SOURCE: fuel gauge moves back and forth from full to empty

you have a bad sending unit inside your tank.
the resistance of the potentiometer inside is broke on the half tank part.

you have to replace it.

SOURCE: Gas Gauge not working properly do you get 25 mpg...I get 21 or so!!!!  Additives will never work on this.  The price for the pump is $150-175 for an aftermarket unit.
I just did the tank job for the sender.  Get an aftermarket pump/sender.  DO NOT ORDER from RockAuto for this part...their listing is wrong.  They send the gasket...which comes with the replacement.  Replacing the unit is relatively easy:

  • Have less than 5 gals of gas in the tank.
  • Get the driver's side of the car in the air and support it.
  • Remove plugs to the left of the tank on the bottom of the vehicle
  • Start car and allow gas pressure to will stall
  • Remove the fill pipe from the left rear of the tank..there is a valve on the fill pipe which will contain all but a few drops of gas
  • support the tank and remove the bolts that hold the tank straps and lower the tank.
  • lower the tank and remove the vent hose at the rear of the tank so you can swing it out
  • after swinging it out, prepare to remove the unit from the top of the tank retaining the connector snap ons for the new unit.  Clean the area around the pump to remove the possibility of contamination.  Tap the ring sharply counterclockwise to remove it from the tank.
  • Remove old and install new, pressing the unit into the sure to use that new gaaket they gave you.  Tap on ring, swing tank back, reconnect hoses, raise and bolt up.  Plug in.
  • Start the car after turning key and waiting for 15 seconds to start so pressure can build.
I did it in 3 hours.  If you have help for liffting and all that, probably 2..2 1/2

The gas gauge says full when you start the engine and the electric range says 446 miles to empty then it will all drop to empty and the gas light will come on, so i never know for sure how much gas I have.

Sending unit gas gauge in the gas tank has gone bad and will need to be replaced. The gas gauge wire is grounding out causing you to have full full indicated and when there is no ground you get empty signal.

This is caused by the gauge in the tank having a bad spot on the float, which is common from wear and tear. Also if your lucky, it may just be the wire harness from the gas tank to the frame might be the issue and will need to be replaced. It worst, it's going to be the sending unit it self.

Thank you for using fixya and good luck

My gas hand floats on my 2002 oldsmobile silhouette

not sure what the hell that means, but if your fuel gauge is moving around then you probably need a new float. It's located inside the gas tank and usually part of the fuel pump. Not an easy job, but possible...

When the gas tank is full the gas gauge shows as empty. When the gas tank is empty the gas gauge shows as full.

Well that tells me that someone installed the wrong fuel level sensor. Your going to have to drop the tank and pull the pump and float assymbly out. Then go to a parts store and get a sending unit that has the opposite resistance of that sending unit. Just wait until the tank is empty so its a lot lighter. You can call the parts store or go down and see if there is multiple sending units. The sending units work by resistance, when the tank is full the float moves up and turns a wheel in the sending unit, which either removes or increases the resistance causing the gauge to lower. The sending units either give full resistance at full or no resistance at full and then changes as the level goes down until it does the opposite at empty.

2003 Oldsmobile Silhouette ran out of gas,now it won't start HELP

Put the gas in the tank, let everything settle, turn key off, then back on to on position, but NOT start. Let the fuel relay engage the pump and draw some gas pressure. Give it a good minute and it'll start right up.
