What causes tires to cup?

The most common cause for "cupping" of tires is a worn or faulty suspension system. It's quite possible that the suspension is all original and you've got excessive wear on the struts, bearings, and possibly tie rod ends. Most brake shops and muffler shops will do a complimentary inspection of your suspension for further diagnosis.

I'm being told I need to have the rear cambers replaced during my alignment because they are off by some measurement and this is causing my rear tires to cup.

Cupping is usually caused by faulty shock or struts. Camber that is out of specification will cause uneven wear from inside to outside of tire. The shop should supply you with a printout of where your measurements are currently and what they should be. Can you send a good picture of the tires tread?

Have had a cupping issue on the inside rear tires since I bought my 2004 Solara SLE new. Dealer says I have not rotated the tires frequently. That just delays the real issue. I am told struts and...

The dealer is right.Struts and bushings can have an effect on tires.Struts keep the tires in contact with the road, when the struts wear out,the tires start to bounce, but you may not notice it.I would start by having the struts checked and replace if need be.

When is the recommended mileage to change the shocks/struts on my 2007 Honda Pilot?...currently about 45k miles...

HONDA Pilot struts do not require replace at specific mileage intervals or maintenance. Your vehicle’s struts should be checked annually. Struts wear out slowly and you may not notice gradual losses in ride comfort, handling and control. Excessive bouncing, rocking back and forth, drifting or nose- diving while braking, swaying, or cupping wear on the tires are some signs that your vehicle may have worn Struts. If you are purchasing new Struts for your HONDA Pilot consider premium Struts. Upgrading your struts usually improves overall ride quality, control and handling. Warn struts can increase the wear of tires, ball joints, steering linkage, springs and C.V. joints. Some original struts may be getting weak after 40,000 or 50,000 miles.

Failure symptoms: Vehicle continues to bounce after hitting bumps in roadway. Front suspension dives severely during hard braking. Swaying or rolling when at higher speeds. Signs of oil leaking from the shock rod seal. Clunking and banging noises coming from the strut may be signs of internal shock failure or strut mounts.

Do the struts need replacing after 80,000 miles. Our tire service called and said they need replacing on my '04 Altima

the strut only need replacing if there is alot of bounce in the car, or if there leaking, or the main reason is there broken. that would be the only reasons to replace struts

Cupping tires Will I need shocks or just new tires?

A little more information would be good. However, start with the basics and work your way in as far as you need:
  • If you have not been rotating tires about every 6000 miles you can get cupping
  • If your current tires are cupped they have to be replaced to rid your self of any potential symptoms
  • The alignment should be checked if you have been rotating
  • When the alignment is done, the struts should be checked for leaks and/or wear

Tire shop says tire wear is due to bad rear struts

you need to replace only the shock cartridges.  Also have the tires rebalanced.
When you receive advice from this website you have to understand that without the item in front of us, we are only able to provide "a best guess" as to what the problem might be based on you description of the defect.  If you haven't described a clear and precise description of the defect you decrease the chances of an accurate reply.  Thank you.

cupping is caused by poorly acting shockabsorbers probably have leaking from the shock struts and may need replacement. sounds a bit early for wear at 50k
